About The Position

The primary function of the apprentice technician is to learn through classes and hands-on training how to perform routine mechanical repairs on hydraulic pumps & motors. This role involves learning safety practices, basic business concepts related to the service department, and utilizing Caterpillar information systems for diagnostics and repairs. The apprentice will gain experience with hand and power tools for disassembly, reassembly, rebuilding, repairing, and testing of construction equipment, and will assist other technicians with larger repairs.

Requirements

  • High school education or GED.
  • Mechanically inclined with good basic knowledge obtained through schooling or work experience.
  • Ability to daily and repeatedly stoop, kneel, bend, and climb beside, onto, and underneath various equipment.
  • Ability to effectively see to perform repairs, research technical manuals, and develop written repair work order reports.
  • Ability to routinely and physically lift/position various parts and manually handle parts up to 112 pounds.
  • Ability to effectively write repair activities on customer work orders.
  • Cognitive reasoning and problem-solving skills to apply knowledge, written information, and verbal instructions in repairing/servicing technical equipment.
  • Exposure to P.C. base equipment and parts information.
  • Capable of learning and understanding technical information, service manuals, and reports.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and utilize safety practices associated with shop operations and various types of shop equipment and tooling, including required PPE.
  • Learn and understand basic business concepts associated with the service department and complete proper service documentation (time entry, service reports, part order forms, core tags, warranty tags).
  • Gain exposure to and utilize Caterpillar information systems for diagnostics, troubleshooting, assembly/disassembly, and parts ordering.
  • Learn and utilize logical troubleshooting procedures using information from the Cat network or external sources (computer diagnostics, troubleshooting guides, wiring schematics, disassembly/assembly guidelines).
  • Use hand and power tools to remove, install, replace, re-build, repair, and test hydraulic pumps and motors.
  • Perform routine repairs on construction equipment.
  • Disassemble and reassemble parts or equipment, drain fluids, clean parts, and use mechanical hoists for heavier parts.
  • Assist other GPEC technicians with larger equipment repairs.
