About The Position

Joining the Customs and Border Protection, Office of Human Resources Management, Talent Management Directorate, within the US Customs and Border Protection Hiring Center will allow you to use your expertise to assist as a Human Resources Specialist subject matter expert in a variety of assignments involving staffing, pay, and processing rules, laws, and regulations for CBP. This position starts at a salary of $55,012.00 (GS-07, Step 1) to $87,482.00 (GS-09, Step 10) with promotion potential to $126,859 (GS-12 Step 10). In this position you will provide evaluative and analytical support to the recruitment and placement process. Major duties may include but are not limited to: Making recommendations on a wide range of staffing authorities and special employment programs in order to meet the agencies staffing goals. Applying qualification standards and ranking methods to evaluate applicants experience, training and education. Utilizing various HR information systems/tools to complete and track workload. Identifying, evaluating, and recommending to management appropriate human resources interventions to resolve complex interrelated human resources problems and issues.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service.
  • Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.

  • GS-07: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as assisting in the preparation of job announcements, performing detailed review of records to determine applicant qualifications, assisting applicants in preparing and submitting personnel forms, entering data into a system for further processing, utilizing HR information systems and tools to update and track data, and responding to routine inquiries concerning HR entitlements, services, and processing procedures.
  • GS-07 Education Substitution: Successful completion of one year of full-time graduate education from an accredited college or university may substitute for the experience required at this level.
  • GS-07 Education Substitution: A bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) may also substitute for the experience required.
  • GS-09: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as consulting with customers on strategies to fill positions and utilizing applicable human resources rules and regulations to advise on best recruitment strategy, applying qualification standards and ranking methods to evaluate applicants' experience, training, and education to determine eligibility, developing rating factors and crediting plans for vacancy announcements, and utilizing various HR information systems and tools to complete and track workload.
  • GS-09 Education Substitution: A master's degree or equivalent graduate degree, 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, a J.D. or an LL.B. degree from an accredited college or university may substitute for experience required at this level.
  • Combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements.

  • Must meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable, subject to verification at any stage of the application process by 10/12/2026.
  • Must disclose if currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch.
  • Must undergo a thorough background investigation.
  • Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates for at least three of the last five years (exceptions may apply).
  • New federal government employees must serve a one-year probationary period.
