About The Position

We are seeking a Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Advisor to support a multidisciplinary project for large-scale Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) highway projects, including urban freeways and remote northern highways. This position reports to the Project Manager with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the HSE Regional Manager, in Ontario, Canada. The HSE Advisor will provide day-to-day guidance and mentorship to AtkinsRéalis personnel and its contractors. The role is responsible for translating HSE strategy into practical systems, providing assurance, and supporting to achieve safe, compliant outcomes. The HSE Advisor will act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for HSE across the remote location project portfolio.

Requirements

  • Certificate/Diploma and/or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a HSE role, on a project of similar scope and complexity.
  • Experience implementing and maintaining HSE management systems while identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Must have previous construction experience.
  • Proven ability to conduct thorough incident investigations, including root cause analysis and development of corrective actions.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable HSE provincial legislation and legislation for relating to transportation.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Sharepoint etc.), with the ability to create reports, presentations, and data analysis tools.
  • A self-starter/solution-focused individual with excellent communication, organizational, time-management, and problem-solving skills.

  • Valid driver’s license and travel to regional offices and project sites is required.

  • Professional certifications such as CRSP, NCSO, or equivalent are considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and support implementation of the Project Safety Management Plan.
  • Deliver orientations, and training for project staff and its contractors.
  • Train all project staff and its sub-contractors to perform site observations and record them on EcoOnline (AtkinsRealis Cloud database), report to client and site prime contractors.
  • Lead toolbox talks on high energy and key risks (e.g., transportation safety, electrical hazards, human-machine interface, remote working conditions).
  • Collaborate with project staff and its contractors to integrate HSE into work planning.
  • Develop and review Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), Safe Work Procedures, and practices.
  • Conduct internal site inspections, audits, and assurance activities to monitor AtkinsRéalis HSE performance.
  • Investigate incidents and support event management processes.
  • Analyze incident trends and recommend corrective/preventive actions.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable regulations (e.g., Ontario OHS, Transport Canada).
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant standards, codes, and environmental requirements.
  • Support resolution of safety issues identified by regulators, clients, or contractors.
  • Supporting Joint Health and Safety Committees functions.
  • Maintain records of inspections, audits, and incidents.
  • Participate in internal and external HSE audits.
  • Stay current with Industry best practices, regulatory changes, and emerging HSE trends.
