About The Position

The HR Generalist provides comprehensive human resources support across multiple functional areas including employee relations, recruitment, onboarding, payroll support, benefits administration, labor relations, performance management, and compliance. This role supports both represented and non‑represented employees and serves as a key partner to employees, supervisors, and union representatives to ensure consistent application of policies, collective bargaining agreements, and employment laws.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
  • 3-5 years of human resources experience in a generalist role
  • Knowledge of payroll fundamentals, wage and hour laws, and HRIS systems
  • Experience working in a unionized or partially unionized environment
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information with discretion

Nice To Haves

  • HR certification (PHR, SHRM-CP, or equivalent)
  • Experience supporting multi-state payroll or timekeeping systems
  • Direct experience administering collective bargaining agreements and grievances

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for employee HR inquiries related to policies, procedures, benefits, payroll, leave, and workplace concerns
  • Support employee relations matters including performance management, corrective action, investigations, and conflict resolution, in partnership with HR leadership
  • Ensure consistent and equitable application of HR policies, procedures, and collective bargaining agreement (CBA) provisions
  • Assist with full‑cycle recruitment including job postings, resume screening, interview coordination, and offer preparation
  • Coordinate new hire onboarding, orientation, and completion of required employment documentation
  • Ensure union seniority, job bidding, and posting requirements are followed where applicable
  • Serve as backup support for payroll processing, including data entry, audits, and validation of hours, pay rates, premiums, and deductions
  • Review payroll reports for accuracy, resolve discrepancies, and respond to employee payroll inquiries
  • Ensure wage, hour, and payroll practices comply with federal, state, local, and union contract requirements
  • Maintain accurate employee data in HRIS, timekeeping, and payroll systems
  • Support benefits administration including enrollments, changes, and employee inquiries for health, retirement, and voluntary benefit programs
  • Coordinate and track leaves of absence (FMLA, state leaves, ADA accommodations, and CBA‑related leaves)
  • Act as a liaison between employees, unions, and third‑party vendors as needed
  • Administer and interpret collective bargaining agreements in collaboration with HR leadership
  • Serve as an HR resource for union‑represented employees and steward interactions
  • Support labor negotiations preparation through data gathering, costing, and compliance tracking
  • Maintain accurate, confidential personnel records and required documentation
  • Support compliance with employment laws (FLSA, FMLA, EEO, ADA, NLRA, wage and hour laws)
  • Assist with audits, reporting, and regulatory inquiries
  • Support performance management, progressive discipline, and documentation practices
  • Assist with training coordination and employee development initiatives
  • Promote employee engagement, culture, and retention efforts
  • Assist in developing, updating, and communicating HR policies and procedures
  • Identify opportunities for HR process improvements, efficiency, and compliance
  • Participate in HR projects and organizational initiatives as assigned
