About The Position

The HR Director is responsible for leading the day-to-day execution of all HR operations, including employee relations, workers’ compensation, recruiting, compliance, and HR administration. This role serves as the primary owner of HR and WC casework, ensuring timely resolution, risk mitigation, and consistent application of company policies. The HR Director partners closely with the VP of HR to drive strategy, manage risk, and support organizational growth, while acting as the operational backbone of the HR function. The HR Director is accountable for driving umano’s standards of safety, service, and integrity. This leader partners closely with executive leadership to drive employee health, satisfaction, compliance, safety, benefits, training, growth, client relationships, and scalability.

Requirements

  • 5–10+ years of progressive HR experience, including employee relations and workers’ compensation
  • Strong experience managing high-volume, multi-site HR operations
  • Deep knowledge of employment law, compliance, and risk mitigation
  • Experience with HRIS, applicant tracking systems, and case management tools
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive situations with sound judgment and professionalism
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage high workload volume with urgency and accuracy
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • High attention to detail and organizational discipline
  • Ability to influence and support leaders at all levels

Responsibilities

  • Management of HR cases, including intake, investigation, action planning, resolution, and documentation
  • Serve as the first point of escalation for employee relations issues across all sites, escalating to VP of HR where required
  • Ensure consistent, legally compliant handling of discipline, terminations, and policy enforcement
  • Manage high-volume HR communications, including employee inquiries, manager support, and urgent escalations
  • Oversee WC casework, including intake, claim management, follow-ups, and resolution
  • Partner with insurance carriers, adjusters, and internal stakeholders to reduce claim exposure and cost
  • Track and manage light duty programs and return-to-work timelines
  • Analyze trends and implement proactive safety and cost-reduction strategies
  • Manage recruiting systems, processes, and team performance
  • Oversee background checks, drug screening, and onboarding compliance
  • Monitor recruiting metrics and drive improvements in speed, quality, and cost
  • Support hiring needs in partnership with the VP of HR, Manager of Recruiting, and recruiting Team
  • Oversee administration of benefits programs, including FMLA, 401(k), and compliance-related notices
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of benefit changes and vendor coordination
  • Support open enrollment execution and ongoing benefits operations
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local employment laws
  • Support litigation, wage claims, audits, and regulatory reporting
  • Maintain accurate documentation and reporting across HR and WC activities
  • Identify risk trends and proactively implement corrective actions
  • Oversee HRIS and related systems (e.g., payroll, recruiting, compliance platforms)
  • Ensure data accuracy, reporting integrity, and process efficiency
  • Manage routine administrative functions, including approvals, verifications, and system updates
  • Provide ongoing support, coaching, and guidance to site managers
  • Ensure training compliance and address gaps in high-risk locations
  • Partner with operations to improve employee performance and reduce turnover
