The Hospital Nursing Supervisor (HNS) directs, organizes, plans, and coordinates hospital activities, exercising judgment, initiative, and leadership to anticipate and respond to technical, organizational, and administrative issues during assigned shifts. The HNS provides leadership and personnel coordination and assumes responsibility for hospital administrative functions Monday through Friday when management or administration is not in-house, and 24 hours on weekends and holidays. The HNS supports efficient use of nursing resources in collaboration with unit leadership, resource management coordinators, and charge nurses. The role is central to patient placement, admission status processes, and facilitating direct admissions during routine and surge situations. The HNS is visible and available across clinical areas to support placement, collaboration among charge nurses, and assessment of current and potential staffing concerns. The HNS interprets administrative and departmental policies and procedures, serves as an administrative liaison, clinical resource, and role model, and triages operational issues or clinical concerns, escalating them to on-call leadership when needed. The HNS also helps resolve issues involving physicians, patients, families, and staff; investigates incidents and occurrences during the assigned shift; and reports findings to the on-call leadership team. The position is part of Children’s Minnesota’s Care Traffic Control Center, which monitors hospital activity and staffing needs across three campuses and coordinates patient flow and staffing resources.
