About The Position

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is seeking a Permanent Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) or Highway Technician 1 (HT1) for Portage County. This role serves the public by working to make Ohio roads safer. The selected candidate will be placed in the classification for which they meet minimum qualifications. The State of Ohio is a drug-free workplace and prohibits the use of marijuana. This position may be subject to additional restrictions. Requirements

  • For Highway Maintenance Worker 1: Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary.
  • Must obtain Class B Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction.
  • For Highway Technician 1: Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & decimals, percentages & fractions; ability to read, write & speak common English vocabulary; 3 mos. trg. or 3 mos. exp. in operation of basic equipment.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction.
  • All answers to the supplemental questions must be supported by the work experience/education provided on your civil service application.
  • All bargaining unit new hires must serve a one (1) year probationary period.
  • The final candidate selected for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check.
  • All final applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit to urinalysis to test for illegal drug use prior to appointments.
  • Selected applicants for this position are required to register as a driver in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Responsibilities

  • Serve the public and work to make the roads in Ohio safer.
  • Attend training to obtain CDL licensure; if not already a licensed CDL holder.
  • Perform highway maintenance activities, including flagging, pothole patching, repairing guardrails, litter pickup, mowing.
  • Perform snow & ice operations.
