About The Position

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is seeking a Permanent Highway Maintenance Worker 1 (HMW1) or Highway Technician 1 (HT1) for District 4 in Mahoning County. This role is crucial for maintaining the safety and efficiency of Ohio's roadways. The position is overtime eligible and subject to a one-year probationary period for bargaining unit new hires. The final candidate will undergo a criminal background check and a drug test, including urinalysis for illegal drug use. This position is also subject to federal testing regulations (49 CFR Part 40 and 49 CFR Part 382), which prohibit marijuana use, including medical marijuana. Selected applicants must register as a driver in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Requirements

  • Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & in reading, writing & speaking common English vocabulary (for HMW1).
  • Formal education in arithmetic that includes addition & subtraction & decimals, percentages & fractions; ability to read, write & speak common English vocabulary; 3 mos. trg. or 3 mos. exp. in operation of basic equipment (for HT1).
  • Must obtain Class B Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction (for HMW1).
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction (for HT1).

  • Class B Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement without airbrake restriction (if already a licensed CDL holder).

Responsibilities

  • Serve the public and work to make the roads in Ohio safer.
  • Attend training to obtain CDL licensure, if not already a licensed CDL holder.
  • Perform highway maintenance activities, including flagging, pothole patching, repairing guardrails, litter pickup, and mowing.
  • Perform snow & ice operations.
