About The Position

The Helper assists the refuse truck driver on pre-assigned and special routes to collect garbage, yard waste, and recycling. The role involves loading waste and containers onto a rear-load garbage truck, operating the packing mechanism, helping the driver back up safely, and maintaining clean service areas and equipment. The Helper provides courteous customer service, follows applicable safety policies, reports issues promptly, and supports other routes or emergency operations as needed. The position involves strenuous physical work and outdoor exposure to varied weather and other environmental conditions.

Able to push or pull 50 pounds independently, 800–1,000 times per day.
Able to lift 50 pounds independently from ground to waist height, 800–1,000 times per day.
Able to get up and down from the cab of a commercial motor vehicle 800–1,000 times per day.
Able to bend at the waist and knees 800–1,000 times per day.
Able to work 8–12 hours in extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
Able to ride on the outside of the truck while servicing residential customers in low-MPH areas.

Responsibilities

Collect solid waste and place it in the rear-load truck, manually or by moving toters to the tipper; lift and carry trash bags, bulk items, and containers.
Climb on and off the rear truck step to load refuse, waste, and carts.
Operate the truck’s packing mechanism to compact waste.
Provide safe, courteous, and efficient customer service to the public and customers, while supporting company, customer, and municipal goals.
Ensure residential garbage and recyclables are picked up and transferred properly; access a residence’s back door when required for pickup.
Answer residents’ questions and direct them to Customer Service or the appropriate government office for additional information.
Comply with ANSI, OSHA, and company safety policies, including Waste Pro Absolute Guidelines.
Assist the Driver with safe backing by directing the Driver from the ground.
When directed, clean behind the compactor blade with a shovel and hoe; spray and clean the hopper and truck at the end of each shift or as needed.
Immediately report safety or customer service issues to the Driver and supervisor.
Clean up scattered refuse and accidental waste spills, and return customers’ containers properly.
Work during emergency situations when required.
Assist other routes as needed to complete daily work.
Attend and participate in assigned company-sponsored training, keep current with job-appropriate technology, and perform other assigned duties.
