About The Position

The Helper assists the refuse truck driver on pre-assigned and special routes to collect garbage, yard waste, and recycling. The role involves manually loading waste and containers into a rear-load garbage truck, operating its packing mechanism, helping the driver maneuver safely, and providing courteous service to residents and customers. The Helper also cleans the truck and work areas, reports safety or customer-service issues, and supports other routes as needed. The position requires following safe operating practices and applicable ANSI, OSHA, and company policies, including Waste Pro Absolute Guidelines. Helpers attend assigned company training and keep current with job-appropriate technology. Work takes place outdoors in varied weather and environmental conditions, including heat, cold, snow, rain, wind, noise, vibration, fumes, odors, and dust. The role may require working during emergencies and riding on the outside of the truck in low-speed areas while serving residential customers.

Be physically able to get up and down from the cab of a commercial motor vehicle 800 to 1,000 times a day.
Be physically able to bend at the waist and knees 800 to 1,000 times a day.
Be physically able to work 8 to 12 hours in extreme weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
Be able to ride on the outside of the truck while servicing residential customers in low-MPH areas.

Responsibilities

Collect garbage, yard waste, and recycling on assigned and special routes, loading waste and containers into the rear of the truck manually or with a toter and tipper.
Lift and carry trash bags, bulk items, and containers; climb onto and off the truck’s rear step; and operate the packing mechanism to compact waste.
Provide courteous, prompt customer service and maintain a positive attitude toward company, customer, and municipal goals.
Ensure residential garbage and recyclables are picked up and transferred properly, including pickups that may require using a back door.
Answer residents’ questions and direct them to Customer Service or the appropriate government office when needed.
Comply with ANSI, OSHA, and company safety policies, including Waste Pro Absolute Guidelines.
Assist the driver with safe backing by directing the driver from the ground.
When directed, clean behind the compactor blade with a shovel and hoe; spray and clean the hopper and truck at the end of each shift or as needed.
Immediately report safety or customer-service issues to the driver and supervisor.
Clean scattered refuse and accidental spills, and ensure customer containers are returned properly.
Work during emergency situations when required.
Assist other routes as needed to complete daily work.
Attend and participate in assigned company-sponsored training courses.
Keep up to date on job-appropriate technology used by Waste Pro.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
