About The Position

The Health Unit Coordinator provides clerical and secretarial services to the assigned nursing unit at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, part of Covenant Health. The role supports efficient unit operations by coordinating communications, records, supplies, and procedures. The coordinator must provide safe, efficient, competent service to the assigned customer or patient population and demonstrate competency in unit-specific functions. The position must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of the coordinator or others.

Requirements

• Must be able to read with comprehension and write legibly.
• Must be proficient in proper grammar.
• Must have knowledge of medical terminology, hospital policies and procedures, infection control, and fire and safety regulations.
• Must provide safe, efficient, competent care to the assigned customer or patient population and demonstrate competency in unit-specific functions.
• Basic life support (CPR) certification may be required when the coordinator works in a department where they may be assigned as a first responder to a cardiopulmonary arrest victim.

Nice To Haves

• Successful completion of a unit secretary (HUC) course or at least one year of recent unit secretary (HUC) experience in a hospital setting is preferred.
• Secretarial or clerical experience is desired.
• Previous hospital experience is desired.

Responsibilities

• Carry out the secretarial and clerical duties necessary for efficient functioning of the assigned nursing unit.
• Communicate patient requests promptly to nursing staff.
• Order and charge for supplies and equipment.
• Schedule procedures and examinations with appropriate departments.
• Notify consultants when ordered, including physicians and classes.
• Maintain patient records and operate the computer system efficiently.
• Process patient classification data manually or via computer.
• Remove medications from the delivery system and promptly give them to the appropriate nursing staff.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
