About The Position

The Health, Physical Education, and Athletics Consultant provides statewide leadership, guidance, and support to Public School Units (PSUs) and schools to ensure high-quality implementation of North Carolina’s Healthful Living Standards. This role focuses on advancing student health, wellness, and physical literacy through standards-based instruction, professional development, and cross-agency collaboration. The consultant provides leadership in making recommendations for policy, program, and fiscal operations as appropriate to the needs of Health and Physical Education. The consultant may be asked to help support state and federal initiatives. This role also co-leads the Healthy Active Children policy data collection and analysis.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in the education field to which assigned from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of specifically related experience in public education; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of the WSCC framework and student wellness initiatives.
  • Strong facilitation, presentation, and professional learning design skills.

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of North Carolina Health Education and Physical Education standards across K–12 settings.
  • Develop and disseminate instructional resources, guidance documents, and best practices.
  • Design and deliver statewide professional development for educators and district leaders.
  • Facilitate training on standards, assessment, and evidence-based instructional practices.
  • Provide guidance on the development and implementation of rules and regulations approved by the State Board of Education.
  • Ensure that athletic rules and regulations adopted by the State Board of Education are communicated to relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with key partners to implement State Board of Education policies and NC legislation.
  • Work closely with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association and the Carolina Athletic Association for Schools of Choice.
  • Partner with associations at the state and national level to support NCDPI’s service to North Carolina public school units in the area of athletics.
