Health Information Specialist
About The Position
The Health Information Specialist maintains a variety of roles within the Health Information Department across sites and locations, based on workload. The position helps ensure the accuracy and integrity of patient health information, responds to information requests efficiently, and provides high-quality customer service. The specialist may monitor paper charts and the purge process, support the Master Patient Index (MPI), release patient records to third parties, audit health records, and provide other support to the department as assigned by the Manager of Health Information.
Requirements
- Ability to multitask effectively.
- 1–2 years of health information office experience.
- Proven customer service experience and/or training.
Nice To Haves
- Prior experience with release of patient record information.
- Experience with Windows and Excel.
- Associate’s degree or equivalent experience.
Responsibilities
- Monitor the Master Patient Index (MPI) and purge process to ensure patient information is accurate and accessed from the same location within the electronic health record, as appropriate.
- Release patient records to third parties according to state and federal regulations and organizational policy, as appropriate.
- Perform health record audits according to current audit procedures, as appropriate.
- Respond to requests in a timely and efficient manner and ensure requests to amend records are accurate.
- Provide customers with high-quality products and customer service, and ensure patients and their customers receive health information in a timely manner.
- Monitor the integrity of the medical record through continuous audit, reporting, and analysis of trends that can inform training and performance review functions.
- Provide other support functions within the Health Information Department as needed and assigned by the Manager of Health Information.
