Head of Growth

4am MediaSan Diego, CA
Onsite

About The Position

4AM Media is seeking a Head of Growth to oversee the entire growth function across its three direct-to-consumer (DTC) brands in the health, cleaning, and pet sectors. As a full-stack brand builder, 4AM Media manages its own supply chain, creative, funnels, media buying, analytics, retention, and customer service. The company spent over $40 million on paid media last year to scale its own products. This leadership role reports directly to the CEO and involves full team performance and P&L ownership. The Head of Growth will lead a team of channel leads and operators across paid acquisition, creative, retention, marketplaces, and affiliate, and will be responsible for filling the development team's backlog. This is a player-coach role, emphasizing coaching, but requiring the ability to step in and run campaigns when necessary. The role demands a blend of strategic thinking and hands-on execution, including daily 1:1s, creative briefings, executive presentations, and technical brief writing.

Requirements

  • 7+ years in performance marketing or growth roles.
  • Experience at $100M+ scale.
  • Proven experience as a buyer, having spent $50k+/day on Meta or Google.
  • Ability to get hands-on when the team needs it.
  • Experience building and developing teams, including hiring, developing, and promoting operators.
  • Skill in giving feedback that changes behavior.
  • DTC ecommerce native understanding.
  • Proficiency in thinking with contribution margin, MER, blended CAC, payback period, and 90-day LTV.
  • Meaningful scaling experience in at least 2 of the following channels: AppLovin, Native, Affiliate, CTV, TikTok Shop, Amazon (Meta and Google are table stakes).
  • Strong intuition for funnels and offers, including building or rebuilding funnels that materially moved conversion rate.
  • Attribution maturity, with experience using tools like Northbeam, Triple Whale, and understanding their limitations.
  • Strong communication skills, both presenting to executives and unblocking junior team members.
  • Operator energy: ability to move fast, ship work, act without permission, and make decisions quickly.
  • Willingness to be in the office every day in San Diego.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Northbeam, Triple Whale, or similar attribution tools.
  • Experience building or rebuilding funnels that materially moved conversion rate.
  • Experience with AppLovin, Native, Affiliate, CTV, TikTok Shop, or Amazon.

Responsibilities

  • Own the entire growth function across all three brands.
  • Lead a team of channel leads and operators across paid acquisition, creative, retention, marketplaces, and affiliate.
  • Fill the development team's backlog with priorities, approximately 80% of their output.
  • Develop and execute paid acquisition strategy and budget allocation across Meta, Google (Search, Display, Shopping, Demand Gen), AppLovin, Native, Affiliate, and CTV.
  • Ensure performance accountability for the buyer team, hitting daily/weekly/monthly spend, MER, and contribution margin targets.
  • Define and manage attribution methodology, ensuring company trust in reported numbers.
  • Set and defend Brand MER and blended MER targets, balancing scale and efficiency.
  • Develop new product launch playbooks, set test budgets, decide channels, and make go/no-go decisions on sustained spend.
  • Generate ideas and drive the pipeline for split testing (creative, audience, LP, offer, funnel).
  • Scope, brief, and ship new funnel architecture (pre-sell, advertorial, quiz, VSL, checkout flow) with dev and creative teams.
  • Test and decide on new offer development (pricing, bundles, free shipping, BOGO, subscriptions, intro offers).
  • Prototype and test new traffic sources, hands-on, before handing off to buyers.
  • Manage the email/retention lead, integrating LTV, repeat purchase rate, and subscription metrics into acquisition targets.
  • Manage the marketplace lead, deciding expansion and focus areas on platforms like Amazon, TikTok Shop, and others.
  • Manage the affiliate lead, setting targets, approving partners, and owning channel contribution.
  • Set the creative testing roadmap, brief quality bar, and velocity.
  • Fill approximately 80% of the dev team's backlog for checkout optimizations, LP infrastructure, attribution improvements, and internal tooling.
  • Write effective briefs for the dev team to ensure accurate implementation.
  • Work directly with the CEO to execute monthly, quarterly, and year-long priorities.
  • Prototype new channels, brief new funnels, and assist buyers when needed.
  • Own revenue, MER, and opex targets for the growth function, with potential to learn and take on more P&L responsibility.
  • Develop and mentor a team of 10+ direct or indirect reports.
  • Manage budget with trust, enabling quick testing and scaling decisions.
  • Control the full stack of growth functions, including channel leads, creative team, and dev backlog.
  • Master the growth function and explore expansion into finance, supply chain, and operations, with potential to become a partner.
  • Drive blended MER improvements without sacrificing scale.
  • Develop channel leads to perform above target.
  • Research and implement at least one new meaningful traffic source.
  • Double creative testing throughput and improve briefing quality.
  • Measurably improve retention metrics on at least one brand.
  • Launch at least one profitable new product and one defining new funnel architecture.
  • Build CEO trust through clear communication and consistent results.

  • Lead a team of 10+ direct or indirect reports.
  • Real budget with trust, enabling quick decisions.
  • Full control of the growth stack.
  • Real growth path into finance, supply chain, operations, and potentially partnership.
  • Opportunity to work directly with the CEO.
