Head of Developer Experience

About The Position

Code Metal is hiring a builder-oriented product leader to own the developer experience for engineers building, translating, verifying, and reviewing agent work. The role turns innovation from forward-deployed engineers (FDEs) into reliable, repeatable products that customer engineers can use independently. The successful candidate will set strategy, build the team, and work alongside the team to ship the first version. The Head of Developer Experience will treat FDEs as customer zero, standardize their tools and workflows, determine which patterns should become commercial products, validate solutions with design partners, and bring products to market. The role also establishes a path for product improvements from secure and air-gapped deployments, makes workflows repeatable, and surfaces lifecycle artifacts and auditable proof so customers can trust and defend results. The position reports to the SVP, Head of Product. It is remote within the U.S. and involves 25% travel. Code Metal is an automated software engineering company founded in 2023, with offices in Boston and San Francisco. Its customers include the U.S. Air Force, L3Harris, RTX, and Toshiba.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in product, technical consulting, or solutions leadership and management.
  • Track record of building tools that make delivery teams faster and turning services work into repeatable commercial products.
  • P&L or revenue ownership for a product line.
  • Hands-on depth in agentic developer tools and AI-assisted SDLC, including leading enterprise adoption.
  • Track record of cutting through complexity to find simple, elegant product solutions.
  • Product judgment to distinguish one-off customer requests from repeatable product needs, and discipline to say no.
  • Ability to ramp quickly into deep technical domains and earn credibility with engineers and technical founders.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills, including explaining complex technical ideas clearly to executives, engineers, and customers.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance if required.

Nice To Haves

  • Consulting or professional services background, especially building products alongside delivery teams.
  • Experience building products for developers, engineers, or other highly technical users.
  • Exposure to government, defense, or other regulated environments.
  • A public body of work on AI adoption, agentic engineering, or software strategy.
  • Experience mentoring product managers and building teams from scratch.

Responsibilities

  • Treat FDEs as customer zero; consolidate and standardize their tools and pipelines, capture repeatable patterns, and decide what becomes commercial product versus custom work.
  • Create a reliable way to bring product improvements back from air-gapped and secure deployments.
  • Own the strategy and roadmap for interfaces where engineers build, translate, verify, and review agent work, and iterate on those interfaces directly.
  • Turn proven FDE workflows into interfaces, templates, skills, and guided flows that produce consistent results.
  • Surface lifecycle artifacts and auditable proof in review workflows, and enable customers to encode their own standards.
  • Validate products with 3–5 commercial engineering teams before broad launch, and instrument adoption and ROI metrics.
  • Create demos, videos, and presentations, and partner with Sales and Growth on packaging, positioning, and launches.
  • Help hire the growing product team, and lead and mentor product managers and designers.

Benefits

  • Health care plan with 100% premium coverage, including medical, dental, and vision.
  • 401(k) with 5% matching.
  • Paid time off, including uncapped vacation, sick days, and public holidays.
