Head of Developer Relations

ClickHouse•San Francisco, CA
•$196,000 - $300,000•Remote

About The Position

The Head of Developer Relations owns how developers discover ClickHouse, become productive with it, and encourage others to use it. This includes the developer experience, educational technical content, developer-facing channels, and community. The role leads a globally distributed team of developer advocates and establishes the goals, systems, and investment priorities for Developer Relations as a core growth channel. The role sets long-term developer and community strategy with marketing, product, and engineering leadership, translating it into a multi-year plan with headcount, budget, and investment priorities. It owns the Developer Relations budget and represents the function to customers, partners, and the open-source community. The Head of Developer Relations works closely with product marketing engineers, regional field marketing, product, engineering, the training team, and organic and AEO teams to improve onboarding, education, community programs, and developer reach. The position measures community growth and engagement, developer experience, and content and channel reach, and connects those measures to signups and pipeline without turning advocates into salespeople. It also develops owned channels and creator partnerships, builds a champions program, and coordinates developer events and educational content so materials reach developers through documentation, video, and AI assistants.

Requirements

  • Experience leading a developer relations or community team at an infrastructure company.
  • Direct management experience of four or more people and strong leadership of a distributed team.
  • Deep technical skill, including the ability to write demos, ship tutorials, and discuss database internals with engineers.
  • Experience running developer events and speaking programs with intentionally selected audiences.
  • Experience building developer education or content programs that scaled beyond their creators, such as tutorials, courses, video, or documentation.
  • Experience growing owned developer channels, such as YouTube, a newsletter, or a podcast, to a substantial audience, and a point of view on how developers find technical content, including through AI assistants.
  • Experience building or scaling developer programs, such as a champions, ambassador, or MVP program, with a track record of innovation.
  • Experience measuring and defending the value of community work, including growth, engagement, and connections to signups and pipeline, without turning advocates into salespeople.
  • Comfort operating globally and cross-functionally with product, engineering, product marketing, and field teams.
  • Willingness to travel at least 25% of the time.
  • DevRel or community leadership around an open-source project with a real community, and experience growing that community while maintaining its trust.

Responsibilities

  • Set ClickHouse’s long-term developer and community strategy with marketing, product, and engineering leadership, and turn it into a multi-year plan with headcount, budget, and investment priorities.
  • Own the developer experience from the outside in, tracking time to first query and getting-started completion, identifying onboarding and documentation friction, and feeding developer needs and issues back to product and engineering.
  • Own the Developer Relations budget and represent the function to customers, partners, and the open-source community, including on stage and on a podcast.
  • Set targets for community growth and engagement across Slack, Reddit, GitHub, YouTube, and advocates’ platforms, as well as developer-experience measures and content and channel reach; report on results as a growth channel.
  • Build a champions program with clear tracks for customers, open-source users, and independent voices.
  • Develop owned developer channels—including YouTube, newsletter, podcast, and advocates’ platforms—and a content system that repurposes talks and demos into tutorials, videos, and posts; use creator partnerships to extend reach.
  • Manage the developer-event portfolio, including meetups, conference talks, and practitioner-led sessions, selecting events intentionally and ensuring they produce recorded and written materials and useful attendance signals.
  • Shape developer education and technical content, including tutorials, workshops, courses, and certification, with the training team, product marketing engineers, and organic and AEO teams; coordinate a shared publishing map across docs, video, and AI assistants.
  • Work with regional field marketing to support in-region developer programs and the startup and partner ecosystem.
