About The Position

Goddard Riverside is a well-established Manhattan community-based agency with an annual operating budget of approximately $50 million. Goddard Riverside is one of New York City’s leading human service organizations meeting the basic needs of children, youth and families, homeless people, and older adults across Manhattan and New York City. The Handyman is responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, functional, and well-maintained supportive housing residence, consisting of more than 50 residential units for adults, including individuals with mobility impairments. Working collaboratively with property management, maintenance staff, and supportive services personnel, the Handyman is responsible for preserving the physical condition of the property by performing timely repairs, preventative maintenance, and addressing safety concerns.

Requirements

  • Minimum 2–3 years of maintenance or handyman experience
  • Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and drywall repairs
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Good communication and customer service skills
  • Able to lift 50lbs, stand for extended periods, walking distances, climbing stairs, operate required equipment power tools, mechanical equipment, etc., climb ladders, enter and exit tight spaces.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate in real time with On-Site Property Manager and On-Site Director of Maintenance regarding the condition of the building and emergency problems as they arise
  • Perform general maintenance and repair tasks (plumbing, electrical, painting, etc.)
  • Respond to work orders in a timely and professional manner
  • Conduct routine inspections of building systems and common areas
  • Repair fixtures, appliances, doors, locks, and other property components
  • Assist with unit turnovers and apartment preparations
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working condition
  • Report maintenance concerns to management promptly
  • Sweep, Clean, Wax and Polish floors.
  • Perform basic electrical work such as resetting circuit breakers, changing switch and outlet cover plates, replacing light ballast, bulbs, and globes
  • Maintain building grounds and public areas of residential buildings and its surroundings
  • Inspect building grounds and other public areas including the backyard, sidewalks, and curb.
  • Addressing urgent maintenance issues such as leaks, power outages, or safety hazards.
  • Ensuring the property complies with Goddard’s policies as well as DHS, DHCR, DOB, DEP, HPD, FDNY, DSNY and any other safety or compliance regulations.
