About The Position

The Grocery Clerk creates an outstanding customer experience through exceptional service and helps maintain a safe, clean environment that encourages customers to return. The role supports the department manager in meeting sales and profit goals and monitoring quality assurance standards. The Grocery Clerk assists customers with finding products, shares information about food specials, and recommends grocery items. The role includes checking product freshness and sell-by dates, providing ordered fresh and non-perishable products, labeling and stocking merchandise, and maintaining inventory. The clerk follows food safety requirements, monitors case and cooler temperatures, maintains temperature logs, and helps keep customers informed about products across the department and store. The position also involves reporting ordering or shipping discrepancies, unsafe conditions, equipment needing repair, and customer or employee accidents to appropriate management. The Grocery Clerk is expected to work cooperatively in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment; handle conflict reasonably and cooperatively; protect customer and business information; follow directions and seek assistance when needed; and support minors, individuals with special needs, and older adults through direct interaction. Essential functions must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

Requirements

Customer service skills.
Effective communication skills.
Knowledge of basic math, including counting, addition, and subtraction.

Responsibilities

Help customers discover products and answer questions about items sold in the department and throughout the store.
Inform customers about food specials and recommend grocery items that meet their needs.
Check product freshness and sell-by dates and take appropriate action.
Provide customers with ordered fresh and non-perishable grocery products.
Label, stock, and inventory department merchandise.
Report product ordering and shipping discrepancies to the department manager.
Stay current with present, future, seasonal, and special advertisements.
Follow food safety regulations and guidelines.
Maintain proper temperatures in cases and coolers and maintain temperature logs.
Develop and maintain knowledge of department products to answer questions and make suggestions.
Create a welcoming environment in which customers feel important and appreciated.
Comply with safety procedures, identify unsafe conditions, and notify store management.
Inspect equipment as part of preventive maintenance and report items needing repair to the appropriate department or store manager.
Notify management of customer or employee accidents.
Work cooperatively in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment and manage conflict reasonably and cooperatively.
Handle customer and business information with honesty and integrity.
Follow directions and seek assistance when needed to resolve customer and business issues.
Provide support and assistance through direct interaction with minors, individuals with special needs, and older adults.
