Grinding Technician-3rd Shift

Anderson International Corp•Stow, OH

About The Position

Sets up and operates Blanchard (rotary surface), surface, and OD (cylindrical) grinders on third shift to finish components to drawing requirements for size, roundness, flatness, parallelism, and surface finish. The technician reads work orders and drawings, sets up parts on magnetic chucks or fixtures, dresses wheels, grinds components to specification, and inspects them before they move to the next operation. The role works without a supervisor on the floor for part of the shift and escalates problems to the 3rd Shift Production Manager. It includes daily machine checks and basic maintenance, accurate work-order labor reporting, communicating job status and handoffs to first shift, and maintaining a clean and organized work area.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to read blueprints and understand GD&T basics, including flatness, parallelism, and perpendicularity.
  • Ability to use micrometers, calipers, height gauges, dial indicators, and bore or snap gauges.
  • Ability to work third shift on a consistent schedule; overtime as workload requires.
  • Good attendance and safety record; follow AIC safety rules and PPE requirements.
  • Motivated, accountable self-starter able to work with limited supervision on an off shift.
  • Basic computer skills for clocking work orders; Sage 500 is used currently, with Epicor Kinetic planned for 2027.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of Blanchard, surface, and/or OD (cylindrical) grinding experience.
  • Machining background; the employer will train the right candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Read work orders, blueprints, and routings to determine stock to remove, operation sequence, and finish requirements.
  • Set up parts on magnetic chucks, fixtures, blocks, or between centers; indicate and square work as required.
  • Select, mount, balance, and dress grinding wheels; set speeds, feeds, and depth of cut.
  • Blanchard grind large flat work to thickness, flatness, and parallelism; load parts on the rotary magnetic chuck and use a hoist or crane for heavy parts.
  • Surface grind smaller parts, steps, shoulders, and faces to required size and surface-finish tolerances.
  • Set up OD grinding work between centers or in a chuck; grind diameters, shoulders, and tapers to size, roundness, runout, and finish requirements.
  • Inspect parts with micrometers, height gauges, indicators, and surface-finish gauges; record first-piece and in-process checks.
  • Perform daily machine checks and basic maintenance, including checking coolant, way lube, and chuck condition; report machine problems to maintenance.
  • Clock on and off every work-order operation accurately and report labor against the correct job.
  • Report routing, drawing, or work-instruction problems through the Process Issue Report during the same shift.
  • Communicate job status, problems, and handoffs to first shift at shift change.
  • Keep the work area clean and organized and report safety issues or concerns to management.
