About The Position

The Department of Pan African Studies seeks graduate students for a 12-month Graduate Assistant position. This role involves providing non-teaching assistance to faculty members in large, lower-division lecture courses. Responsibilities may include research assistance, handling or training others on equipment, assisting faculty with course material preparation, participating in the evaluation of student work, tutoring, potentially delivering guest lectures or leading classroom activities, attending course lectures, reading and evaluating student papers, and proctoring examinations. The specific duties will depend on the assigned area and the faculty supervisor's needs.

Requirements

  • Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of Pan African Studies.
  • Graduate Assistant must be currently enrolled in or admitted to a Cal State LA graduate degree program.
  • Admissions to the Master Program in the Department of Pan African Studies, in good academic standing
  • Enrollment in course(s) for the semester towards the degree
  • Ability to relate well with others within the academic environment and have the ability or potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students
  • Demonstrate commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff and students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • The successful applicant will work effectively, respectfully, and collaboratively in a diverse, multicultural, and inclusive settings.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional non-teaching assistance to faculty member
  • Provide research assistance and practical experience in fields related to their advanced study
  • Assisting with handling/or training other students in the use of equipment or other resources
  • Assisting faculty with research and preparation of course materials
  • Participate in evaluation of student work
  • Tutoring students
  • Potential to deliver guest lectures or lead classroom activities
  • Attend Course lectures
  • Read and evaluate student papers

  • Performance other tasks as assigned
