About The Position

The City of Fredericksburg is seeking a Geographic Information System (GIS) Analyst to support citywide operations. This role involves maintaining geospatial data, producing high-quality GIS products, and ensuring the accuracy, accessibility, and reliability of GIS systems for staff, public safety, and the community. The ideal candidate will enjoy problem-solving, working with diverse datasets, collaborating across departments, and contributing to the City's geospatial strategy. Responsibilities include managing daily GIS operations, maintaining geospatial datasets, developing spatial databases and GIS portals, coordinating imagery analysis, performing GPS-based field inspections, analyzing geospatial data for city management, creating maps and apps, providing training and support to GIS users, troubleshooting GIS systems, scripting for workflows, and ensuring proficiency with ESRI applications and portals for reliable system performance. Strong GIS principles, communication skills, decision-making, collaboration, fieldwork, and interpretation of land records are emphasized.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Cartography, Geography, Landscape Ecology, Natural Resources, Computer Science, or related field.
  • Two years of professional GIS experience involving data management, map production, and spatial analysis.
  • Equivalent education and experience considered.
  • Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s License.
  • Ability to pass a Police background check and obtain Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Certification.
  • Strong grasp of GIS principles, cartography, database management, and geospatial data integrity.
  • Knowledge of scripting in GIS processes and workflows.
  • Experience working with the ESRI Suite of applications, including ArcGIS Pro, Experience Builder, and online ESRI applications.
  • Ability to analyze complex datasets and generate accurate, useful mapping products.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise portals and content.
  • Skilled in technical troubleshooting and adapting to evolving technologies.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to train staff and create clear documentation.
  • Ability to prioritize responsibilities, make informed decisions, and collaborate effectively.
  • Comfort with occasional fieldwork, research of land records, and interpretation of plats/surveys.
