About The Position

Calpine, a business unit of Constellation Energy Corporation, is America's largest generator of electricity from natural gas and geothermal resources. With 79 energy facilities, Calpine's fleet has the capacity to generate approximately 27,000 MW of electricity. The company is committed to environmental stewardship and utilizes renewable geothermal plants. This role ensures that all Day-Ahead/Real-Time commercial power operations take place correctly and on time, adhering to ISO/RTO, transmission companies, NERC scheduling, and department deadlines. The position involves maintaining spreadsheets, communicating with traders and schedulers, interacting with ISO/RTOs for Bid/Offer submission and outage management, and utilizing fundamental data for dispatch models. It also includes forecasting natural gas burns, executing transmission deals, creating reports, tracking available MW and outages, and interfacing with Gas and Power traders. The role requires staying updated on ISO/RTO market rules, coordinating Real & Reactive Power Capability Testing, collecting and submitting data for various requests, and hosting meetings with the Commercial Desk and Plant Power Operations. Additionally, it involves understanding Power Purchasing Agreements (PPA) execution, performing data reconciliation with accounting, and potentially assisting cash power traders. Deployment to an alternate work site as part of Calpine’s Business Continuity Plan may be required. A Junior Generation Coordinator may perform some duties at the Senior level.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; preferably in Business, Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Accounting, Economics or equivalent.
  • Typically requires 1-3 years of experience.
  • Strong mathematical and organizational skills.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel/spreadsheet/database skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Some, working knowledge of market tariffs (PJM preferred), Open Access Transmission Tariffs (OATTs), and Day Ahead/Real Time Commercial Operations is preferred but not required.
  • Expected to perform in fully functioning capacity, equivalent to a journey level contributor within a year of starting.
  • Little instruction on day-to-day work and general instructions on new assignments.
  • May assist on project for an ongoing process or short-term project within own department.
  • With assistance solves operational problems and associated technical issues.
  • Works on problems of moderate complexity.
  • Make decision regarding own work, often in ambiguous situations and be able to make recommendation and generalization on operation processes.
  • Information sharing – gives and receives information such as options, technical direction, instruction and reporting results.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that all Day-Ahead/Real-Time commercial power operations take place in a correct and timely manner within regard to ISO/RTO, transmission companies, NERC scheduling and department deadlines.
  • Maintains/updates spreadsheets, communicates with traders and schedulers, and interacts with the ISO/RTOs for Bid/Offer submission of resources and outage management.
  • Utilizes fundamental data including supply/demand, renewable forecasts, weather, and market prices for dispatch model and determine optimal dispatch for Calpine’s Power assets.
  • Forecasts natural gas burns for gas/power traders and gas schedulers to make purchase/sale decisions.
  • Executes transmission deal purchase or sale to support full monetization of power assets.
  • Creates and distributes daily/monthly reports to provide positions and support profit and loss reporting.
  • Tracks and schedules available MW and upcoming outages for generation assets across the region.
  • Interfaces with Gas and Power traders daily, communicating status updates on power assets and any changes impacting daily positions and strategies.
  • Stays up to date on related ISO/RTO market rules, procedures and manuals.
  • Coordinates Real & Reactive Power Capability Testing which includes scheduling testing, internal review of data and submission of results to ISO/RTO.
  • Collects, organizes sand submits information from various contributors to ISOs and/or Market Monitors related to Routine or Ad-Hoc Data Requests, Surveys and Unit Specific Parameters and Characteristics.
  • Hosts Daily and Monthly, Seasonal or Ad-Hoc Meetings with Plant Power Operations and Commercial Desk to communicate market conditions and confirm current and short-term operational capability of the assets.
  • Understands and facilitates execution of responsibilities of Commercial Desk related to any Power Purchasing Agreements (PPA).
  • Perform data reconciliation activities with accounting team.
  • May assist with strategies with cash power traders.
  • May require deploying to alternate work site as part of Calpine’s Business Continuity Plan.
  • Solid and working knowledge in value optimization for power generation assets.
  • Uses independent judgment within defined policies and practices.
  • Interprets guidelines, selects methods, techniques and analytical approach.
  • Proactive coordination and alignment across his/her own department, Calpine internal functional groups, and external balancing authorities/ISO/counterparties under guidance of Senior Generation Coordinator.
