About The Position

Under general supervision, this role coordinates and schedules driver assignments for fixed bus routes, evening shifts, lift-bus operations for the physically and visually impaired, lunch relief, and tours. The position monitors and assists in the operation of two-way radio and telephone communications, and acts as a liaison between the public and department staff. Responsibilities include maintaining a safe and efficient transportation system, updating bus system data, filing paperwork, and assisting other General Services division supervisors and managers. The role involves regular contact with other divisions, departments, residents, vendors, and the public.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school.
  • Two years' experience in transporting, communicating with passengers, and co-workers, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
  • Knowledge of computer and applicable software programs.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the community.
  • Ability to read, understand, interpret, and explain rules and regulations.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written directions.
  • Ability to relate to the needs and concerns of residents.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Ability to deal with public relations problems courteously and tactfully.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.
  • Possession of a Commercial B License with passenger endorsement.
  • Medical Certificate Examination (DL 51) required every year.
  • Enrollment in the DMV Pull Notice Program.
  • Enrollment in the Random Testing Program for Controlled Substances and Alcohol.
  • Ability to pass the Functional Capacity Test showing ability to safely handle and secure passengers using mobility devices upon hire and annually.
  • Regular attendance required.
  • All duties performed on-site for the Community.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and schedules driver assignments for fixed bus routes, evening shift, lift-bus operations, lunch relief, and tours.
  • Monitors arrival and departure times of drivers/buses and assigns special request assignments.
  • Communicates with the public, transportation staff, clubhouse staff, and the Security Gate Clearance System.
  • Completes necessary forms for daily operation.
  • Notifies mechanic staff of mechanical problems with buses.
  • Monitors schedules and informs supervisor of problems with routes and/or schedules.
  • Monitors the two-way radio base station to communicate with drivers.
  • Contacts security in case of emergencies, accidents, or incidents.
  • Maintains records and updates for current information surrounding route schedules, driver left-right turn guides, and Friday night church pick-up lists.
  • Performs varied clerical duties, including data entry.
  • Conducts research, processes paperwork, and schedules/coordinates work in the field and at GRF facilities for other General Services divisions.
  • Enters purchase requisitions, performs data entry, record keeping, filing, and scanning.
  • Serves as back-up bus driver as needed, driving safely to designated stops.
  • Screens passengers to ensure only residents use the service.
  • Gives directions to passengers and assists passengers using mobility devices to board and secure devices.
  • Reports accidents immediately to the dispatcher, requesting police or ambulance service as needed.
  • Completes company accident reports.
  • Reports any maintenance problems encountered while driving the bus.
  • Utilizes all available gauges and instrumentation to accurately communicate bus problems.
  • Works effectively with co-workers, customers, and others by sharing ideas constructively, listening to others' suggestions, keeping commitments, and informing others of work progress.
  • Addresses problems and issues constructively to find practical business solutions.
  • Understands and communicates transportation and company policies, Vehicle Code Laws and Regulations, safe driving practices, and working methods and procedures governing drivers.
  • Prepares written or verbal special project proposals for changes and improvements to the transportation system.
