About The Position
The General Merchandise Dept Manager is responsible for team member engagement and development within their span of care, including recognition, feedback, coaching, performance management, training, and succession planning. The manager directs Leads and Team Leaders and is accountable for area operations and financial results, including shrink, productivity, safety, scheduling and staffing forecasts, and resolution of team member and customer conflicts. The role identifies and implements process improvements and serves as a steward of Meijer culture. The manager supports onboarding, training, development, and coaching; identifies talent and holds career discussions to build staffing and leadership talent pipelines; and ensures Meijer standards are upheld. The role oversees execution of corporate plans to manage services and products effectively, maximize sales and productivity, and manage budget line items in the P&L. It also drives safety, compliance, and store condition management, and ensures Team Leaders and Leads guide team members, assign daily work, and address training needs. Other duties may be assigned or required.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 4+ years of retail/grocery or customer service experience.
- Passion for providing industry-leading service.
- Ability to communicate clear and precise direction to team members.
- Ability to analyze financial and statistical information and use it to make informed decisions.
- Ability to lead an organization that practices working safely at all times.
- Proactive and creative thinking applied to the business.
- Thorough understanding of seasonal and diverse merchandising to meet customer and community needs and gain sales and market share.
- Strong business acumen.
- Innovative attitude to help Meijer set the industry standard.

Responsibilities

- Resolve team member and customer conflicts.
