About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings and facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks for various areas including high dusting, sanitizing surfaces, bathroom cleaning, trash removal, floor care, and grounds maintenance. The position also requires good customer relations and service skills, reporting any issues to a supervisor, and maintaining a neat personal appearance. Other duties may be assigned as needed, potentially including floor care such as stripping, waxing, extraction, bonneting, auto scrubbing, and buffing.

Requirements

Basic knowledge of janitorial work operations.
Basic knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
Basic knowledge of safe work practices.
Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
Maintain physical condition appropriate for the performance of assigned duties, including walking, standing or sitting for extended periods, operating equipment, lifting/carrying 1-30 lbs, pushing/pulling 5-35 lbs, climbing stairs and ladders, bending/twisting/balancing, kneeling/crouching/crawling, reaching/handling/grasping/fingering, and overhead reaching.
Adequate sight for cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination.

Experience with floor care – stripping and waxing floors, extraction and bonneting of carpets, auto scrub and buffing of floors.

Responsibilities

Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, cleaning surfaces above shoulder height in a counter-clockwise direction.
Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height using a germicidal solution, including ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, and trash cans.
Clean and sanitize bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, and dispensers, refilling supplies as needed.
Empty trash cans, replacing liners and cleaning cans if necessary.
Dust mop or vacuum floors using the "S" stroke method, ensuring all areas under furniture and in restrooms are cleaned.
Perform grounds care, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and flower beds, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and policing parking lots.
Clean and maintain public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping main hallways, cleaning glass, cleaning planters, and performing high dusting of window areas.
Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, placing chairs back under tables, spot cleaning spills, and removing dirty trays to the washroom for cleaning.
Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, working from the back of the room and mopping under furniture and behind doors.
Conduct self-inspections after cleaning to ensure all steps are completed and furniture is properly placed.
Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting, along with high dusting.
Engage in customer relations and service by being friendly, courteous, answering questions, and reporting any issues to the supervisor.
Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care tasks like stripping and waxing floors, extraction and bonneting of carpets, and auto scrubbing and buffing of floors.
