About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings and facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks for various areas including common areas, bathrooms, and grounds, as well as customer relations and service.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time.
  • Operating powered and non-powered equipment.
  • Lifting/carrying 1 – 30 lbs. equipment, supplies, trash.
  • Push/pull, using both hands and arms while performing cleaning duties, exerting 5-35 lbs force.
  • Climbing stairs and ladders while cleaning upper areas, drapes.
  • Bending/twisting/balancing at waist, knees, neck throughout shift.
  • Kneeling/crouching/crawling while cleaning lower areas, retrieving supplies from lower shelves.
  • Reaching, handling, grasping and fingering while operating equipment, using hand and power tools, wiping and cleaning surfaces and using cleaning equipment.
  • Overhead reaching required throughout shift.
  • Sight – in performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards.
  • Requires depth perception, hand and eye coordination in operation of equipment and tool use.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting using a treated high duster.
  • Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height, including ledges, chairs, countertops, and trash cans.
  • Spot clean windows using the proper solution.
  • Clean and sanitize bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, and dispensers, refilling as needed.
  • Empty trash cans, replace liners, and clean cans if necessary.
  • Dust mop or vacuum floors using appropriate techniques and equipment.
  • Perform grounds care, including emptying ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and flower beds, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and cleaning public area glass.
  • Clean and dust mop main hallways, clean planters, and perform high dusting of window areas.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, spot clean spills, and clean trays using a tray power washer.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution.
  • Visually inspect cleaned areas to ensure furniture placement is correct and to prevent issues.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and wall spotting.
  • Interact with customers in a friendly and courteous manner, answering questions or referring them to the appropriate person.
  • Report any broken or out-of-order items to the supervisor.
  • Work quietly and minimize noise.
  • Stay within the assigned work area unless directed otherwise by a supervisor.
  • Maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care (stripping, waxing, extraction, bonneting, auto scrubbing, buffing).
  • Maintain a clean and neat personal appearance while on the job.
