About The Position

The General Cleaner is responsible for performing a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings/facilities to maintain a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. This role involves detailed cleaning tasks for various areas including high dusting, sanitizing surfaces, bathroom cleaning, trash removal, floor care, and grounds maintenance. The position also requires excellent customer relations and service skills, ensuring a positive experience for building occupants and visitors.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic operations of janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals (per MSDS sheets).
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Sufficient communication skills to interact with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment.
  • Ability to interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to lift/carry 1 – 30 lbs. of equipment, supplies, or trash.
  • Ability to push/pull using both hands and arms while performing cleaning duties, exerting 5-35 lbs force.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders while cleaning upper areas and drapes.
  • Ability to bend/twist/balance at waist, knees, neck throughout the shift.
  • Ability to kneel/crouch/crawl while cleaning lower areas and retrieving supplies.
  • Ability to reach, handle, grasp and finger while operating equipment, using hand and power tools, wiping and cleaning surfaces.
  • Ability to perform overhead reaching throughout the shift.
  • Adequate sight for performing cleaning tasks and maintaining safety standards, including depth perception and hand-eye coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Perform high dusting using a treated high duster, working in a counter-clockwise direction.
  • Sanitize and spot clean surfaces below shoulder height, including ledges, chairs, telephones, countertops, and trash cans.
  • Remove fingerprints and smudges from doorknobs and walls.
  • Spot clean windows using the proper solution.
  • Clean and sanitize bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, and dispensers, refilling as needed.
  • Empty trash cans, replacing liners and cleaning cans if necessary.
  • Dust or vacuum floors using a treated dust mophead or vacuum cleaner, working from the back of the room towards the door.
  • Perform grounds care, including emptying and cleaning ash urns and trash cans, policing sidewalks and flower beds, spot cleaning spills, removing gum, wiping benches and vending machines, and policing the parking lot.
  • Maintain public common areas by dust mopping and spot mopping hallways, cleaning planters, and high dusting window areas.
  • Clean, remove trash, and sanitize tables in the food court, and clean trays using a tray power washer.
  • Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, working from the back of the room.
  • Visually inspect cleaned areas to ensure all tasks are completed and furniture is properly placed.
  • Perform daily cleaning of halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and walls, including spotting and high dusting.
  • Engage in customer relations and service by being friendly, courteous, and helpful to customers.
  • Report any broken or out-of-order items to the supervisor.
  • Work quietly and maintain a clean and neat personal appearance.
  • Report to the supervisor if work assignments are not completed by the end of the shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may include floor care such as stripping and waxing, carpet extraction and bonneting, auto scrubbing, and buffing floors.
