About The Position

The General Cleaner performs a variety of cleaning activities in assigned buildings and facilities to keep them clean, sanitary, and orderly, and performs other tasks related to the assignment. Duties include cleaning high and low surfaces, sanitizing and spot-cleaning, cleaning and restocking bathrooms, emptying trash, dusting or vacuuming floors, sanitizing floors, and caring for grounds and public common areas. Work areas include hallways, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, furniture, and the food court. The cleaner inspects completed work, corrects issues as needed, and reports broken or out-of-order items to a supervisor. The role requires courteous customer service, quiet and professional conduct, maintaining a neat personal appearance, staying in the assigned work area unless directed otherwise, and notifying the supervisor if assigned work is not completed by the end of the shift. Other duties may be assigned by a supervisor or Account Manager, including floor stripping and waxing, carpet extraction and bonneting, and floor auto-scrubbing and buffing.

Requirements

Knowledge of basic janitorial work and the methods, materials, and equipment used in janitorial work.
Knowledge of basic safe work practices and the use of toxic and non-toxic chemicals according to MSDS sheets.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions, and to communicate sufficiently with coworkers and supervisors.
Ability to operate powered and non-powered janitorial equipment and interpret written instructions and warning labels on cleaning chemicals.
Ability to maintain the physical condition needed to perform assigned duties, including extended walking, standing, or sitting; lifting and carrying 1–30 pounds; pushing and pulling with 5–35 pounds of force; climbing stairs and ladders; bending, twisting, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, and handling equipment and supplies.
Ability to perform overhead reaching throughout the shift.
Sight, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination sufficient to perform cleaning tasks and operate equipment and tools safely.

Responsibilities

High-dust surfaces above shoulder height using a treated high duster, and clean the duster after use.
Sanitize surfaces below shoulder height and spot-clean fingerprints, smudges, and windows using appropriate cleaning solutions.
Clean bathrooms, including sinks and toilets, and check and refill soap and paper dispensers as needed.
Empty trash cans, wipe them when needed, and replace liners.
Dust mop or vacuum floors, including beneath furniture, and clean dust-mop heads after use.
Clean and check outside areas several times during the day, including ash urns, trash cans, sidewalks, flower beds, curb lines, parking lots, benches, vending machines, window ledges, and public-area glass.
Clean public common areas, including dust mopping and spot mopping hallways, cleaning glass, maintaining planters, and checking for cobwebs and debris.
Clean and sanitize food court tables, return chairs beneath tables, spot-clean spills, empty trash, and maintain outside eating areas.
Take dirty trays to the washroom, clean them using the tray power washer, and stack clean trays for reuse.
Sanitize floors using the proper germicidal solution, mopping beneath furniture and behind doors.
Review completed work, check furniture placement, and make corrections to prevent problems or complaints.
Clean halls, lobbies, stairs, water fountains, and furniture, and perform wall spotting and high dusting daily.
Provide courteous customer service, answer questions or refer customers to someone who can help, and work quietly.
Report broken or out-of-order items and unfinished work to the supervisor.
Perform other assigned duties, which may include floor stripping and waxing, carpet extraction and bonneting, and auto-scrubbing and buffing floors.
