About The Position

Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance and care of the District’s grounds and landscaping; operates and maintains a variety of landscaping equipment and tools; and performs related work as required. This is the journey level class in the Gardener series. Incumbents perform the full range of duties assigned to the Gardener II level, including the ability to work independently on assigned tasks. Positions in this class are typically responsible for performing the more complex landscaping and grounds maintenance tasks. This class is distinguished from the Gardener I by the ability to perform the full range of duties and work with greater independence. This class is distinguished from the Landscape Supervisor by the absence of supervisory responsibilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years of experience in grounds maintenance or landscaping, including experience with the operation and maintenance of landscaping equipment.
  • Valid Nevada Driver’s License.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Nevada Pesticide Applicator’s License within one year of employment.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of horticulture and landscaping.
  • Knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of landscaping equipment.
  • Knowledge of the identification and control of common plant pests and diseases.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with irrigation system repair and maintenance.
  • Experience with the application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
  • Possession of a valid Nevada Pesticide Applicator’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and maintains a variety of landscaping equipment and tools, including mowers, trimmers, blowers, edgers, tillers, chain saws, sprayers, and hand tools.
  • Performs a variety of grounds maintenance tasks, including mowing, edging, trimming, pruning, planting, fertilizing, watering, weeding, and pest control.
  • Assists with the installation of new landscaping, including planting trees, shrubs, flowers, and turf.
  • Applies pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers according to established safety procedures and regulations.
  • Repairs and maintains irrigation systems, including sprinklers, valves, and timers.
  • Operates District vehicles to transport tools, equipment, and materials.
  • Identifies and reports potential hazards or maintenance issues to supervisor.
  • Follows safety procedures and guidelines for the operation of equipment and the handling of materials.
  • May assist with the training of Gardener I or other grounds maintenance personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
