About The Position

The Gaming Compliance Officer is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring compliance programs to ensure the Tribe operates in accordance with applicable tribal, federal, and state laws, regulations, and internal policies. This role supports the Tribe’s sovereignty by strengthening governance, promoting ethical practices, and reducing regulatory risk across all departments, including Gaming Operations. The position ensures adherence to established Minimum Internal Control Standards (MICS) and Tribal Internal Control Standards (TICS) where applicable.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Law, Public Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience) required.
3-5 years of experience in compliance, auditing, gaming regulation, or related field required.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Excellent organizational skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Working knowledge of MICS and TICS requirements.
Understanding of federal Indian law and tribal governance.
Familiarity with NIGC regulations and audit processes.
Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
Ability to travel on occasion for business purposes.
Sensitivity to various cultures, including Native American cultures.
Regular attendance and punctuality.
Able and willing to work any changes in scheduled hours as required.

Nice To Haves

Experience working with a Tribal gaming operation or regulatory body preferred.
Experience with internal audits or financial controls preferred.
Professional compliance certification (e.g. CCEP) preferred.

Responsibilities

Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive compliance program tailored to tribal operations.
Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations including: Tribal laws, codes and ordinances. Federal regulations (e.g. IRS and National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) requirements). State requirements where applicable.
Monitor and enforce compliance with Minimum Internal Control Standards (MICS) and Tribal Internal Control Standards (TICS) within gaming operations.
Conduct regular compliance audits, internal control reviews, and risk assessments.
Evaluate departmental procedures to ensure alignment with approved TICS and identify gaps or deficiencies.
Investigate compliance concerns, violations, or irregularities and recommend corrective actions.
Serve as liaison between the Tribe and regulatory agencies, including the National Indian Gaming Commission.
Assist in the development, revision, and implementation of TICS to ensure they meet or exceed MICS requirements.
Provide training to staff and management on compliance standards, including MICS/TICS requirements and internal policies.
Maintain documentation and audit trails required for regulatory review and inspections.
Prepare reports for Tribal leadership, auditors, and regulators regarding compliance status and findings.
Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and regulatory adherence.
Attend Tribal Council or Gaming Commission meetings as required.
Travel occasionally for training or regulatory conferences.
Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
