FRT & RR Suspension Engineer

Hyundai Motor Company•Ann Arbor, MI

About The Position

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (HATCI) is seeking an experienced engineer to join its Chassis Engineering Design Team. The role leads the design, development, and validation of front and rear suspension systems for U.S. SUVs, pickup trucks, and off-road vehicles, with the goal of delivering robust, high-performance suspension architectures. The engineer works with cross-functional teams to integrate systems, meet customer requirements, and achieve durability and reliability goals. The team emphasizes collaboration, technical excellence, knowledge-sharing, hands-on problem-solving, and mentoring. The engineer develops suspension concepts and packaging layouts, creates component and assembly models and drawings in CATIA V5, and coordinates analysis and testing. The role also involves supplier coordination, engineering documentation, design reviews, manufacturing and quality collaboration, problem resolution, continuous improvement, and mentoring junior engineers. Travel may be required up to 20% of the time, domestically and internationally.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in chassis and suspension design, focused on front and rear suspension systems.
  • In-depth understanding of vehicle ride and handling, off-road performance, and NVH considerations for heavy-duty trucks and SUVs.
  • Good working knowledge of vehicle body and NVH performance.
  • Knowledge of solid axle and independent suspension systems in off-road conditions.
  • Proficiency in CATIA V5.
  • Experience using engineering tools to create and modify 2D and 3D drawings.
  • Familiarity with PDM systems such as ENOVIA V6 or Windchill PLM.
  • Hands-on experience with mechanical analysis, including FEA and analytical calculations, and suspension kinematics.
  • Experience planning and executing vehicle or component tests, such as durability-rig, track, and NVH testing.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering design and processes.
  • Knowledge of tooling design variables and processes and related materials.
  • Innovative, proactive approach to the technical direction of chassis components.
  • Ability to explain technical topics to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word; ability to prepare reports and spreadsheets as needed.
  • Flexibility with program and process changes, including late changes to meet customer needs.
  • Excellent time-management, self-management, and organizational skills.
  • Strong written, oral, interpersonal, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to diagnose complex issues, including failure analysis, and develop robust solutions under tight timelines and in cooperation with adjacent teams.
  • Willingness to attend training sessions, workshops, or conferences to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience specifically with pickup trucks, SUVs, or off-road vehicles.
  • Experience with electric or hybrid vehicle suspension systems.
  • Familiarity with other CAD software, such as CATIA V6, NX, or SolidWorks.
  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency with CAE tools such as ANSYS, Nastran, and MATLAB/Simulink for advanced suspension modeling, dynamic simulations, or product optimization.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Six Sigma certification.
  • Experience with vehicle program launches from concept to production.
  • Project management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead end-to-end design of front and rear suspension components, including control arms, springs, dampers, linkages, subframes, and bushings.
  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D drawings in CATIA V5 and oversee CAD release for prototyping and production.
  • Coordinate FEA and kinematic/dynamic analyses with CAE teams; analyze static, dynamic, and fatigue loads and iterate designs to meet strength, stiffness, durability, ride, handling, weight, cost, and performance goals.
  • Develop and document suspension concepts and packaging layouts that account for vehicle geometry, articulation, ground clearance, steering geometry, off-road requirements, project requirements, and standards.
  • Define, support, and execute suspension validation plans, including test-plan creation, prototype builds, bench testing, and full-vehicle testing for durability, NVH, ride comfort, handling, and off-road performance.
  • Correlate test data with simulation results and follow through on requested design refinements.
  • Coordinate with suppliers on suspension component design and development; provide technical direction, review supplier CAD models and drawings, manage design reviews, and ensure deliverables meet specifications and quality standards.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews, DFMEA/PFMEA sessions, and design-for-manufacturing discussions.
  • Prepare and maintain engineering documentation, including specifications, test reports, control plans, DFMEAs, design-review materials, and engineering reports, in compliance with applicable industry and regulatory standards.
  • Apply GD&T as needed and maintain detailed component and assembly models, drawings, and technical specifications to support program milestones and production readiness.
  • Investigate and resolve development engineering issues and support post-launch issues when requested; implement corrective actions and continuous improvements.
  • Review IQS, VDS, JP Power, and Consumer Reports to support warranty and quality issues.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, and product engineering teams to ensure designs are feasible for production and service.
