About The Position

Overheard is launching Overheard Sports and is seeking a freelance Content Creator to help build it from the ground up. This role involves ideating, writing, producing, and publishing daily static and short video content that interprets major sports moments through a relatable, cultural, and entertainment-first perspective. The focus is on engaging content akin to a group chat, highlighting viral moments, fan interactions, and cultural discussions surrounding sports, rather than just game statistics. This is a hands-on role where the creator will manage all aspects of content creation, from conception to final asset, across written editorial, low-lift video, and supporting formats. The goal is to establish the Overheard Sports feed as a go-to destination for sports culture enthusiasts, including those more interested in narratives than stats. This freelance position is ideal for individuals passionate about sports and internet culture, who can quickly transform game-day events into highly shareable content. Collaboration with the Editor, Social Leads, and the broader Overheard team is expected for shaping the page's identity, contributing ideas, developing new formats, and ensuring brand consistency.

Requirements

  • 2–4 years of experience in editorial, social content creation, sports media, publishing, entertainment, or a similar creative field.
  • Exceptional writing skills with a comedic sensibility, capable of adopting Overheard's specific voice (quick, sharp, observational, irreverent).
  • Deep familiarity with sports and sports culture across multiple leagues, including conversations among female fans online.
  • Proven ability to ideate and execute social-first content across Instagram and TikTok.
  • Comfortable using analytics and audience signals to guide content decisions.
  • Ability to fully produce own content: design memes, graphics, and carousels in Canva (or similar).
  • Ability to shoot and edit video on iPhone or consumer-grade equipment.
  • Strong understanding of meme culture and internet trends.
  • Highly organized, able to manage multiple content streams and hit deadlines independently.
  • Flexibility to cover live events, including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Collaborative and communicative, eager to pitch, brainstorm, and build new formats.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience launching or growing a social account, with examples of content or pages helped build.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, or other lightweight video editing tools.
  • A good eye for design and speed, even without a formal design background.

Responsibilities

  • Launch and grow the Overheard Sports page by defining its voice, content pillars, and visual identity.
  • Establish a consistent posting cadence to position the page as a reliable daily source of sports culture content.
  • Develop and test recurring content formats and franchises to encourage audience engagement and sharing.
  • Track content performance and iterate quickly to drive follower growth, shares, and saves.
  • Write and publish original, on-voice content daily, focusing on shareability across major leagues and events.
  • Cover sports moments through a cultural and comedic lens, writing sharp, witty, brand-aligned copy.
  • React quickly to live and breaking sports moments (games, drafts, trades, etc.) to ensure real-time participation in conversations.
  • Identify audience interests by monitoring comments, trends, and analytics to inform content creation.
  • Spot emerging sports-culture conversations, including athlete fashion, celebrity sightings, and fan behavior.
  • Share insights with the Editor and Social team to guide content strategy.
  • Fully produce all content, from idea to finished asset, including designing memes, graphics, and carousels.
  • Shoot, edit, and package short-form videos using an iPhone or similar equipment.
  • Maintain a nimble, social-first production style aligned with Overheard's pace and aesthetic.
  • Bring fresh ideas for editorial posts, video franchises, and comedic formats rooted in sports culture.
  • Plan content around the sports calendar while remaining flexible for unexpected events.
  • Uphold Overheard's tone, POV, aesthetics, and writing style across all content.
  • Stay current with internet culture, trending humor, and sports discourse.
  • Collaborate with Creative, Social, and Editorial teams to support launches and cross-promotions.
  • Maintain high editorial standards for accuracy, clarity, and comedic alignment.
  • Manage a fast-moving content pipeline and meet deadlines, including occasional evenings and weekends for key events.
  • Contribute to evolving best practices and creative playbooks.
