About The Position

Overheard New York is seeking a freelance Content Creator to contribute to its daily NYC-focused content. The ideal candidate will be responsible for generating ideas, writing, producing, and publishing content that aligns with the distinct 'Overheard' brand voice. This role requires a quick wit, a strong connection to internet culture, and an ability to create relatable content that resonates with a New York City audience. The creator will work with written editorial, social-first video, and other formats to ensure the Overheard New York feed remains fresh, humorous, and engaging. This project-based freelance position is suited for individuals passionate about internet culture, who can quickly transform everyday NYC experiences into captivating content. Collaboration with the Editor, Social Leads, and the wider Overheard team will be essential, involving participation in pitch meetings, development of new content formats, and maintaining brand consistency across all platforms.

Requirements

• 2–4 years of experience in editorial, social content creation, media, publishing, entertainment, or a similar creative field.
• Exceptional writing skills with a comedic sensibility, able to nail Overheard's specific voice (quick, sharp, observational, irreverent, but never try-hard).
• Deep familiarity with New York City: neighborhoods, culture, and the conversations locals are having.
• Proven ability to ideate and execute social-first content across Instagram and TikTok.
• Comfortable shooting and editing video on iPhone or consumer-grade equipment.
• Strong understanding of meme culture and internet trends, and how to translate everyday NYC moments into compelling content.
• Highly organized, able to manage multiple content streams and hit deadlines independently.
• Collaborative and communicative, excited to pitch, brainstorm, and build new formats.

Nice To Haves

• Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, or other lightweight video editing tools.

Responsibilities

• Write and publish original, on-voice content for Overheard New York on a consistent schedule.
• Write sharp, witty, brand-aligned captions, headlines, copy, and scripts in the Overheard voice, tailored to a New York audience.
• Overflow-publish on the city-agnostic Overheard pages as needed to help maintain pacing and voice consistency.
• Ensure every post feels platform-native and culturally relevant to New Yorkers specifically — neighborhoods, subway culture, NYC-specific humor and references.
• Shoot, edit, and package low-lift short-form videos using an iPhone or consumer-grade equipment.
• Maintain a nimble, social-first production style that matches Overheard's pace and aesthetic.
• Bring fresh ideas to pitch meetings for editorial posts, video franchises, and comedic formats rooted in NYC culture.
• Have an instinct and dedication to testing new formats and content styles.
• Uphold Overheard's tone, POV, aesthetics, and writing style across every asset.
• Stay on top of internet culture, trending humor formats, and NYC conversations to keep the account relevant and timely.
• Partner with Creative, Social, and Editorial teams to support launches and content experiments.
• Maintain high editorial standards for accuracy, clarity, and comedic alignment.
• Stay organized across a fast-moving content pipeline and deliver on deadlines.
• Contribute to evolving best practices and creative playbooks as Overheard New York grows.
