FPGA Engineer II

KARL STORZ•Goleta, CA

About The Position

KARL STORZ is seeking an FPGA Engineer II to design, develop, test, integrate, and verify FPGA designs for advanced medical video camera systems. The role supports the development of imaging technologies and works with cross-functional engineering teams to help ensure high-quality, reliable system performance. The engineer develops synthesizable Verilog HDL designs and Verilog/SystemVerilog testbenches, troubleshoots and resolves design issues, and analyzes resource utilization, power consumption, timing, and performance against system requirements. The role also supports FPGA integration and system-level verification, develops embedded software for processors interfacing with FPGA designs, and contributes to design reviews, testing, and documentation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical discipline with 2–5 years of experience in FPGA design or a related field; alternatively, a master's degree in one of these disciplines with 0–2 years of relevant experience.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Verilog, SystemVerilog, or VHDL for FPGA design, implementation, and verification.
  • Basic proficiency in developing, testing, and verifying Embedded C software for microcontrollers interfacing with FPGAs.
  • Working knowledge of video timing and video interface standards.
  • Intermediate experience troubleshooting electrical systems, including FPGA, hardware, and software interactions.
  • Ability to identify, recommend, and implement innovative solutions to complex design challenges.
  • Understanding of FPGA power consumption, performance, resource utilization, and design tradeoffs.
  • Ability to architect FPGA designs based on system requirements and contribute to requirements development.
  • Intermediate understanding of FPGA architecture, internal structures, and FPGA development tools.
  • Ability to contribute to continuous improvement of FPGA design methodologies and engineering processes.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge sharing with other engineers.
  • Strong technical documentation skills, including developing clear and accurate requirements, design descriptions, and engineering analyses.
  • Knowledge of medical device quality systems and applicable regulatory standards, including FDA 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, and ISO 9001.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop synthesizable Verilog HDL code for FPGA applications.
  • Develop Verilog and SystemVerilog testbenches to simulate and verify FPGA designs.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve FPGA design issues.
  • Analyze FPGA resource utilization, power consumption, timing, and performance to ensure designs meet system requirements.
  • Collaborate with hardware and software engineering teams to support FPGA integration and system-level verification.
  • Ensure FPGA designs meet applicable technical specifications and quality standards.
  • Develop and implement embedded software solutions for processors interfacing with FPGA designs.
  • Support engineering design reviews, testing, and documentation activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by management.
