About The Position
The Foster Placement Coordinator connects animals in need with suitable foster homes and supports foster families throughout the placement process. The role works closely with the Foster, Medical, Behavior, and Operations teams to identify animals who would benefit from foster care, coordinate placements, and help foster caregivers provide appropriate care. The position also supports animal care and daily shelter operations, maintains placement and caregiver records, and obtains and maintains Certified Euthanasia Technician (CET) certification.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Ability to safely handle animals of varying sizes, health conditions, and temperaments.
- Basic knowledge of animal care and medical needs.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work professionally and collaboratively with staff and volunteers.
- Previous experience working in an animal shelter or similar environment.
- Ability to safely lift items weighing at least 50 pounds to a height of 4 feet and safely handle dogs weighing up to 150 pounds.

- Previous shelter experience is a plus, but not required.
Responsibilities
- Match animals in need with available foster homes based on animal needs and foster family capabilities.
- Work with Medical, Behavior, and Operations teams to identify animals who may benefit from foster placement.
- Coordinate animal pick-ups and returns, prepare supplies and medications, and communicate care plans to foster families.
- Coordinate foster returns with the Foster Team and Senior Operations Manager and help ensure appropriate kennel space.
- Screen, train, and provide ongoing support to new and existing foster families.
- Respond promptly and professionally to foster inquiries and program communications.
- Create and distribute foster pleas through email and social media to increase successful placements.
- Communicate clearly and compassionately with foster families about animal health, behavior, and care needs.
- Assist the Foster Veterinary Medical Team with animal handling and medication preparation as needed.
- Follow humane animal-handling practices and help maintain a safe, clean environment.
- Maintain accurate records of animals in foster care, animals awaiting placement, and foster family information and availability.
- Contribute ideas and solutions to improve foster placements, outreach, and caregiver support.
- Obtain and maintain Certified Euthanasia Technician (CET) certification and perform associated duties.
- Perform other duties that support Asheville Humane Society’s mission and daily operations.
