About The Position

Air is seeking self-starting, customer-value-oriented software engineers to join its Forward Deployed Engineering team. The role is accountable for building new, differentiated 0-to-1 capabilities end to end in the field with customers. The engineer moves quickly but responsibly to deliver valuable software-driven outcomes, works directly with end users, and takes ownership of important, ambiguous problems. Success requires curiosity, strong judgment in balancing priorities and tradeoffs, flexibility, and a focus on outcomes.

A typical week may involve spending time onsite with users to understand their pain points; collaborating with product managers and designers to scope, architect, and deliver new product initiatives and prototypes; building customer-facing prototypes; and prioritizing and addressing gaps based on user feedback. The role involves iterating quickly, including learning from failed attempts.

This is a full-time position based in Arlington, Virginia; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; or remote. The role may require up to 50% travel.

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship is required.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• At least 1 year of front-end or back-end software development experience.
• Experience with SQL, Java, and/or TypeScript/React.
• Ability to work independently with little supervision.
• Desire to work in a challenging, fast-paced technology environment.

Nice To Haves

• Current U.S. security clearance or ability to obtain one with company sponsorship.
• Experience in or exposure to a startup or other entrepreneurial environment.
• Experience working within the boundaries of a federally accredited software environment.
• Experience working in a customer-facing or consulting role.

Responsibilities

• Conduct customer site visits to diagnose and understand pain points.
• Participate in end-to-end software development of new feature functionality and design capabilities.
• Iterate quickly to progressively unlock customer value.
• Craft clean, testable, and maintainable code.
• Collaborate with product managers and designers to scope, architect, and deliver product initiatives and prototypes.
• Build and deliver working, customer-facing prototypes.
• Assess, prioritize, and correct gaps in prototype solutions based on user feedback and in partnership with product managers.
