Forward Deployed Software Engineer

Fluxcap•Washington, DC
•$130,000 - $170,000•Hybrid

About The Position

FluxCap is hiring a Forward Deployed Software Engineer to build software that helps lawyers connect law, evidence, and case strategy, starting with antitrust matters. The engineer will work directly with lawyers to understand where they encounter difficulties and develop software to help them move forward. Projects may include importing large document sets, helping lawyers trace arguments to supporting evidence, and improving tools for reviewing and correcting AI-generated work. The role follows projects from the initial conversation through production. The engineer will partner with legal engineers and work closely with the CTO and experienced software engineers on project scoping, technical decisions, and code review. The position is suited to earlier-career engineers with strong fundamentals and experience building working software; work begins with a focused project, with responsibility increasing as the engineer learns the product and legal domain. The role is hybrid and based in New York City, with travel to customer sites. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States; FluxCap is not currently able to sponsor visas.

Requirements

  • Experience building working software through a job, internship, open-source contribution, or substantial project; no minimum years of experience is required.
  • Strong programming fundamentals and familiarity with TypeScript or JavaScript and a frontend framework such as React.
  • Clear communication, curiosity about how people work, and willingness to ask questions when something is unclear.
  • Ability to break problems into manageable steps, seek feedback, and follow through.
  • Habit of checking work and investigating unexpected results, including AI-generated output.
  • Authorization to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not currently available.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with LLMs, retrieval, or evaluation frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Work with lawyers and legal engineers to understand a problem and choose a useful first step.
  • Build frontend and backend features, data integrations, and AI workflows.
  • Write tested, dependable software and handle sensitive case information with care.
  • Observe how lawyers use shipped software, troubleshoot problems, and improve it based on their feedback.
  • Identify problems that arise across cases and build solutions usable by other legal teams.
  • Follow projects from the initial conversation through production.
  • Take on increasing responsibility as product and domain knowledge grow, including ownership of larger workflows and helping decide what to build next.

Benefits

  • Annual base salary of $130,000–$170,000, depending on experience, plus equity.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with an employer match.
  • Company-paid life insurance and short-term disability.
  • Learning and professional development budget.
