About The Position

The Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA), under the authority of the Emergency Management Act, leads the coordination and co-operation of all organizations involved in emergencies and disasters. This includes emergency and disaster prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. The Alberta Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) is accountable and responsible to the GoA, to Albertans, to their communities, and to industry for the protection of people, their property, and the environment from the effects of emergency events. Alberta relies on a decentralized “system” for managing the various types of emergency events that occur every year. The AEMA accomplishes its objectives by leading the co-ordination, collaboration and co-operation between all entities involved in prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery activities within this diverse system. Our agency also works to ensure vital public services, such as government services and first responders, are available during a crisis.

Requirements

  • University education in a related field (Emergency Management, Public Administration, General Management or Emergency Services Administration) PLUS 4 years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent as described below.
  • Directly related education or experience considered based on: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
  • Experience working with First Nations Communities
  • Experience working in public or private setting in a field involving operational and tactical level emergency management.
  • Incident Command System (ICS) 300 qualified; or able to achieve qualification within one-year of assuming position.
  • Minimum Class 5 driver's license with ability to achieve air brake certificate and able to provide a clear driver abstract
  • Experience with training and facilitation

  • Demonstrated experience involving operational and/or tactical level emergency management
  • Incident command post and incident management team experience and qualifications
  • Awareness of the Disaster Recovery Regulation and the Municipal Wildfire Assistance Program along with their associated guidelines

Responsibilities

  • Provide advice and expertise to local authorities to inform and support their ability to effectively execute their emergency management responsibilities
  • Monitor, liaise and provide advice on emergency plans to sustain a consistent standard of public safety system preparedness in alignment with legislated requirements and/or best practices
  • Inform, coordinate and deliver training on a variety of emergency management topics across the region to enhance capacity and competence of communities
  • Promote and deliver public education initiatives across the regions to increase public awareness and readiness across the province
  • Respond and deploy to emergency and disaster incidents, providing expert advice and support to local authorities. This will normally involve attendance at a community or regional Emergency Coordination Centre (ECC), but could in some circumstances require attendance at the actual incident site
  • Able to travel 90% of the time and spend extended periods of time away from home
  • Able to work extended and irregular hours and/or shifts with minimal or no notice
