About The Position

Fire Protection Engineering Intern at Cushing Terrell. This is an in-person internship supporting our Fire Protection Engineering team on real client projects. You will work under the guidance of licensed fire protection engineers, gaining exposure to fire protection system design, including sprinklers, alarms, smoke control, and suppression systems. You will help review construction drawings and specifications for compliance, assist with fire risk assessments and hazard analyses, and support engineering calculations such as hydraulic analysis and smoke control. Success in this internship means building a base foundation of engineering principles and code requirements, reviewing building codes and standards including NFPA and IBC, participating in site visits and inspections, and leaving with a clear picture of what it means to work in the AEC industry.

Requirements

  • Completion of 3+ years of a mechanical engineering or related undergraduate program
  • Basic understanding of building codes and standards
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and Bluebeam
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn and adapt
  • Ability to effectively collaborate and communicate with team members across disciplines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to sprinkler, alarm, or smoke control system design
  • Interest in fire risk assessments and hazard analyses
  • Familiarity with NFPA, IBC, or local fire code regulations
  • Interest in hydraulic analysis or engineering calculations

Responsibilities
