About The Position

SmithGroup is seeking a Fire Protection Engineering Intern to join its Boston office for the summer of 2027. The intern will work with integrated architecture and engineering project teams on design solutions for a range of environments and building types. The 12-week summer internship takes place between May and August.

The position includes modeling plumbing and fire protection systems in Revit, performing fire suppression calculations and pipe sizing, laying out fire alarm systems, and conducting building code and life-safety analyses. The intern will receive mentorship from experienced engineers and may visit construction sites or completed project sites. SmithGroup offers hybrid work options, allowing interns to work in the office or remotely as needed.

Requirements

• By the time of the internship, have completed at least sophomore year or have graduate standing in an accredited mechanical, electrical, architectural, or fire protection engineering program.
• Relevant coursework in fire protection.

Nice To Haves

• Some experience with Revit, AutoCAD, RAM, RISA, Robot, and the Microsoft Office Suite.

Responsibilities

• Work on integrated architecture and engineering project design teams.
• Model supply, waste and ventilation, medical gas, and fire protection systems using Revit 3D Modeling software.
• Perform fire suppression calculations using calculation software.
• Calculate pipe sizing for plumbing and fire protection systems.
• Complete fire alarm system layouts.
• Perform building code and life-safety analyses.
• Receive mentorship from experienced engineers.
• Visit construction sites and/or completed project sites.
