About The Position

Performs skilled to highly skilled administrative and supervisory work for the Monticello Fire Department; plans, organizes, and performs work related to fire prevention and suppression, and emergency medical services to prevent or minimize the loss of life and property by fire and emergency medical conditions; performs fire and emergency medical services; serves as the head of training, fire prevention and suppression services; performs related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid MN driver’s license.
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years prior work experience as a firefighter or in a closely related role, including certification as a first responder or higher.
  • Must have previous Officer experience with the Monticello Fire Department.
  • Considerable knowledge of modern fire suppression, prevention, and emergency medical service principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of first aid and resuscitation techniques and their application demonstrated through state certification.
  • Working knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, and departmental and City policies.
  • Working knowledge of records retention requirements.
  • Working knowledge of the operation of office equipment including operation of a personal computer with standard office software and Internet.
  • Considerable skill in the operation of Fire department tools and equipment.
  • Considerable ability to train and supervise personnel.
  • Considerable ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with City staff, elected officials, state and county officials, and the general public.
  • Considerable ability to effectively give and receive verbal and written instructions.
  • Considerable ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with City staff and the public.
  • Considerable ability to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, coordinates, supervises, and evaluates fire operations.
  • Establishes and ensures compliance with fire department and City policies.
  • Plans, implements, and oversees fire programs; reviews departmental performance and effectiveness; formulates programs or policies to alleviate deficiencies.
  • Supervises and coordinates the preparation and presentation of the annual Fire Department’s budget; plans for and reviews specifications for new and replacement equipment.
  • Plans for and communicates with the City Administrator and Finance Director on future large expenditures to be included in the Capital Improvement Plan.
  • Responds to alarms and directs activities at the scene of emergencies as required.
  • Assigns personnel and equipment required based on situation or task.
  • Oversees the inspection of buildings and other properties for fire hazards and enforces fire prevention ordinances thru the Fire Marshal.
  • Directs in-service training activities with assistance from the Assistant Chief.
  • Controls and oversees all departmental expenditures; recommends and approves the purchase of equipment and supplies.
  • Enforces compliance with departmental and City policies; responds to departmental grievances with assistance from the HR Manager as needed.
