About The Position

Performs skilled administrative and supervisory work for the Monticello Fire Department; performs fire and emergency medical services; performs related duties as required. This position is appointed by the City Council on odd numbered years based upon the recommendation of current fire department personnel; position serves a maximum of four (4) consecutive 2-year terms. This position includes a monthly stipend for Officer duties. Assigned officer duties require approximately 15 hours per month.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid MN driver’s license.
  • Must have a minimum of two (2) years prior work experience as a firefighter including certification as a first responder or higher.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the work of firefighters in performing their assigned duties.
  • Responds to alarms directing routes to be taken, directing work of the firefighters pending arrival of a superior officer.
  • Determines methods of fire suppression, supervises laying of hose lines, directing of water streams and pressure of stream, placing of ladders, ventilations of building, rescuing of persons, and placing of salvage covers.
  • Reviews disciplinary recommendations of subordinate firefighters.
  • Monitors and observes departmental activities ensuring that conduct and performance meets department and City standards.
  • Participates in the operation of department in-service training activities.
  • Assists subordinates in carrying out duties as needed.
  • Attends conferences and other meetings to keep abreast of current trends in the field; represents the City Fire Department in a variety of meetings.
  • Coordinates activities and exchanges information with other fire departments and various City personnel.
  • Interacts with the public, department officers, and other City personnel in the performance of Fire Department duties.
  • Maintains fire pagers and portable radios, orders new equipment, solicits quotes, and submits radios or pagers for service as needed.
  • Participates in county wide committees related to radios or paging systems, including the Wright County Fire Chiefs Association Radio Committee.
  • Develops and maintains an on-boarding program for new firefighters.
  • Supervises and oversees the maintenance and repair of fire station items (excluding vehicles); reviews contracts from vendors including but not limited to plumbing and heating maintenance, generator testing, electrical, window cleaning, and fire station upkeep; maintains records of maintenance.
