About The Position

The Financial Counselor assists qualifying individuals with applications for Medicaid and other assigned health insurance and assistance programs. The role is based at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn and requires bilingual Spanish communication. The counselor screens patients for program eligibility, helps complete applications, follows application status, and supports patients in obtaining required documentation. The position also involves patient communication, coordination with other departments, interpreter assistance, and general office duties.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• At least 2 years of Medicaid background.
• Bilingual Spanish is required.
• Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.

Responsibilities

• Screen patients to determine eligibility for Medicaid and programs such as Child Health Plus, SSI, and Public Assistance.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the billing supervisor or billing director.
• Interact courteously with patients and staff, and communicate with other departments to facilitate patient flow or resolve patient issues.
• Perform general office duties, including filing, answering telephones, transmitting messages, translating, and typing letters and forms using a PC or typewriter.
• Assess patients’ ability to communicate in English and assist in arranging an interpreter as needed.
• Contact patients with incomplete applications to obtain required information or documents by telephone, correspondence, or direct contact; refer problem cases or issues to the Coordinator as necessary.
• Complete simplified or community applications.
• Follow up on the status of all applications.
• Schedule appointments for patients to return with required documentation.
• Approve prescriptions for patients with pending Medicaid or who have lost or misplaced Medicaid cards.
