About The Position

The Financial Counselor verifies inpatient and observation patient benefits to determine each patient’s financial responsibility. The counselor contacts patients who have a financial obligation for their hospital stay and attempts to collect payment, using good judgment when arranging secure payment plans. The role includes interviewing patients to confirm registration information, completing required forms, obtaining signatures, and determining eligibility for financial assistance. The counselor also researches patient concerns directed to the facility after discharge to help expedite claim processing and reimbursement.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Prior experience in a business office or in a medical practice financial counselor, insurance follow-up, billing, cash posting, or reimbursement position.
• Knowledge of medical terminology and computer literacy.
• Sufficient previous clerical experience, typing skills, and knowledge of personal computers, word processing, Excel spreadsheets, and standard office equipment.
• Ability to type a minimum of 35 words per minute.
• Ability to communicate effectively with the public and perform routine mathematical computations.
