Field Technician I - MN
About The Position
Lumen is hiring an entry-level Field Technician I to support enterprise customers by installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and restoring network services in the field. The role is intended for candidates who want to learn hands-on technical work and build a telecommunications career. Training includes structured and instructor-led learning, as well as on-the-job experience, to prepare the technician to independently support customer and network operations. The technician must be willing to serve the greater Minneapolis, Minnesota market. The position involves installing, testing, and maintaining telecommunications equipment and network services; troubleshooting customer and network issues; and traveling to customer and network locations. It includes outage response and service restoration, with participation in an on-call rotation. Work takes place in a physically demanding field environment and may involve working in all weather conditions.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED, or up to 2 years of relevant job experience including at least 1 year in network monitoring, installation, or maintenance/repair.
- Basic networking knowledge and interest in telecommunications technology.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate a company vehicle.
- Ability to work in a field environment, including climbing, crouching, lifting, and other physical job requirements.
- Strong learning aptitude, work ethic, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work overtime and participate in an on-call rotation.
- Strong communication skills and a customer-focused mindset.
- Demonstrated reliability and commitment to long-term career growth.
- Ability to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; lift 50 pounds; and work in all weather conditions.
Nice To Haves
- 0 to 2 years of experience in a technical, telecommunications, or field service role.
- Experience with telecommunications installations, troubleshooting, or maintenance activities.
- Fiber optic installation or testing experience.
- Ethernet or circuit testing experience.
- Experience as a Telecom Technician, Fiber Network Technician, or Transmission Technician.
- Rack-and-stack experience within network or telecommunications environments.
- Technical school, trade school, or community college training in a related field.
- Hands-on experience working with network infrastructure or telecommunications equipment.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot network equipment, remove or replace defective equipment, and work with appropriate resources to isolate issues and restore the network.
- Proactively identify potential problem areas to help ensure network integrity.
- Assist with installation, changes, decommissioning, and testing of Next Generation technologies, including Edge Compute, Wavelength, Fiber Optic transport, Ethernet, SONET, and IP network layers.
- Install and test network and customer premise equipment, including delivery and installation of end-user services.
- Install, activate, test, and maintain network services and telecommunications equipment.
- Perform basic troubleshooting and repair for customer and network service issues.
- Conduct fiber testing, Ethernet testing, and circuit validation as assigned.
- Travel to customer and network locations to complete field service work.
- Support outage response and service restoration, including participation in an on-call rotation.
- Provide professional communication and technical support to deliver a positive customer experience.
- Follow safety procedures while working in a physically demanding field environment.
- Collaborate with team members and participate in ongoing training and development programs.
