About The Position
Lumen is hiring an entry-level Field Technician I to support enterprise customers by installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and restoring network services in the field. The role is intended for people interested in hands-on technical work and building a career in telecommunications. Structured training, instructor-led learning, and on-the-job experience help technicians develop the skills to independently support customer and network operations. The technician must be willing to service the greater Minneapolis, Minnesota market. The work includes supporting network and customer-premises equipment, telecommunications services, and next-generation network technologies. It requires travel to customer and network locations, participation in outage response and an on-call rotation, and adherence to safety procedures in a physically demanding environment. The position is onsite and includes work in all weather conditions.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED, or up to two years of relevant job experience, including at least one year in network monitoring, installation, or maintenance/repair.
- Basic networking knowledge and interest in telecommunications technology.
- Valid driver's license and ability to operate a company vehicle.
- Ability to work in the field, including climbing, crouching, lifting, and other physical job requirements.
- Strong learning aptitude, work ethic, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work overtime and participate in an on-call rotation.
- Strong communication skills and a customer-focused mindset.
- Demonstrated reliability and commitment to long-term career growth.
- Ability to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; lift 50 pounds; and work in all weather conditions.
Nice To Haves
- Zero to two years of experience in a technical, telecommunications, or field service role.
- Experience with telecommunications installations, troubleshooting, or maintenance.
- Fiber-optic installation or testing experience.
- Ethernet or circuit testing experience.
- Experience as a Telecom Technician, Fiber Network Technician, or Transmission Technician.
- Rack-and-stack experience in network or telecommunications environments.
- Technical school, trade school, or community college training in a related field.
- Hands-on experience with network infrastructure or telecommunications equipment.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot network equipment, replace defective equipment, and coordinate with appropriate resources to isolate problems and restore the network.
- Proactively identify potential problem areas to help ensure network integrity.
- Assist with installation, changes, decommissioning, and testing of Edge Compute, Wavelength, fiber-optic transport, Ethernet, SONET, and IP network layers.
- Install and test network and customer-premises equipment, including delivery of end-user services.
- Install, activate, test, and maintain network services and telecommunications equipment.
- Perform basic troubleshooting and repairs for customer and network service issues.
- Conduct fiber testing, Ethernet testing, and circuit validation as assigned.
- Travel to customer and network locations to complete field service work.
- Support outage response and service restoration, including participation in an on-call rotation.
- Provide professional communication and technical support to deliver a positive customer experience.
- Follow safety procedures while working in a physically demanding field environment.
- Collaborate with team members and participate in ongoing training and development programs.
