Field Service Technician I, Switchgear
About The Position
The Field Service Technician I assists with start-up commissioning, integration, emergency service, and troubleshooting of Vertiv medium-voltage electrical switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, PLCs, meters, and other automated devices. The role also includes mechanical repairs and modifications. The technician evaluates equipment operating conditions, performs general and preventive switchgear maintenance, responds to customer emergency calls, and strives to resolve equipment issues on the first visit. The technician manages their own schedule, communicates accurately and promptly with internal and external customers, and maintains strong relationships with customers, coworkers, sales representatives, the CRC, supervisor, and direct manager. The role includes maintaining compliance with safety requirements and submitting accurate timecards and expense reports. Travel is required for 80% of the role. The position is safety-sensitive and requires passing a pre-employment drug test and background check.
Requirements
- Training in electrical theory and technologies, or experience and/or prior military service performing applicable job duties.
- Familiarity with electrical/electronic test equipment and fundamentals.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Standard computer skills, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to consistently lift up to 50 pounds.
- Required vision abilities include close, distant, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; sponsorship is not available.
Nice To Haves
- Five or more years of hands-on medium-voltage switchgear or field-services experience is desired.
- Ability to read schematics and blueprints for power control and automation is desired.
- Knowledge of power distribution, AC/DC, voltage circuit theory, and practical troubleshooting is desired.
- Background in electrical power, including medium voltage, and experience with most types of switchgear testing is a plus.
- Experience programming PLCs and HMIs is a plus.

- Perform general and preventive maintenance on switchgear.
- Respond to emergency calls at customers’ request.
- Strive to provide customers with a first-time fix for their equipment.
- Provide accurate and timely communication to internal and external customers.
- Monitor and ensure compliance with safety policies, procedures, guidelines, and laws.
- Provide accurate and timely timecards, expense reports, and other reporting.
