About The Position

Base is seeking a Field Reliability Engineer to manage the reliability of its deployed hardware fleet. This role involves monitoring fleet health using data, making decisions about hardware in the field, triaging returned units, and tracking failure rates to inform design and supplier decisions. The position covers both in-house designed and supplier-made hardware. Strong fundamentals and problem-solving skills are valued over extensive experience.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong electrical engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to build and read dashboards for fleet monitoring using tools like Grafana, SQL/BigQuery, and Python.
  • Experience with system-level testing, debugging, and troubleshooting of Battery Energy Storage Systems, power electronics, or complex electromechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with failure analysis techniques and materials characterization methods.
  • Proficient knowledge of electronics (PCBs, PCBAs, electronic components).
  • Familiarity with reliability concepts such as failure-rate tracking, MTBF/AFR, and the ability to build a Weibull plot.
  • Hands-on approach with excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Experience with field-deployed hardware and RMA processes.
  • Experience driving supplier corrective actions and tracking supplier performance.
  • Comfort working with both in-house designed and supplier-made hardware.
  • Strong communication skills for reporting reliability findings to design, manufacturing, and supplier teams.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate field failures and manufacturing non-conformances to determine root cause, traveling locally as needed.
  • Build and read dashboards (Grafana, SQL/BigQuery, Python) to monitor fleet health and identify reliability trends.
  • Track failure rates and maintain accurate data to produce Pareto charts for prioritizing reliability efforts.
  • Determine when to dispatch field swaps or pull hardware for investigation and manage the process.
  • Receive and triage returned hardware, characterize failures, and escalate to design engineers for teardown if necessary.
  • Develop tests to recreate field failures in the lab.
  • Recommend design changes or corrective actions for reliability issues.
  • Drive, track, and report supplier performance on implementing corrective actions for supplier-made parts.
  • Maintain detailed records of failure analysis and reliability assessments.
