Senior Embedded Field Reliability Engineer

Tractable•Salt Lake City, UT
•$150,000 - $180,000

About The Position

Tractable is hiring a Senior Embedded Field Reliability Engineer to maintain and improve the reliability of its growing installed fleet of LumaScanner vehicle-scanning systems. The role focuses on sustaining first-generation hardware with known electrical and integration limitations while the embedded team works on a longer-term redesign. The engineer will keep deployed scanners operational and recoverable, reduce customer-facing issues, and provide field data to inform the redesign. The position works closely with customer support and embedded R&D and includes time at customer sites.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of hands-on embedded engineering experience at senior or staff level.
  • Experience reproducing and root-causing intermittent failures in deployed hardware and operating an RMA or failure-tracking process.
  • Experience with recovery engineering, including watchdogs, bootloaders, A/B firmware partitions with automatic rollback, and remote reset.
  • Board-level hardware debugging experience involving power sequencing, brownouts, grounding and EMI, thermal issues, and camera interfaces such as USB, PoE, or GigE.
  • Proficiency with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, multimeters, and reading schematics and datasheets.
  • Experience with fleet telemetry and over-the-air updates for deployed devices.
  • Experience with Embedded Linux and production C/C++, plus Python for test and diagnostic tooling.
  • Comfort working directly with customers, traveling to sites, and explaining issues clearly to non-technical people.
  • A pragmatic, data-driven approach: starting with failure rates, logs, and power topology, and delivering workarounds quickly under time pressure.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with machine vision or multi-camera systems.
  • Experience designing a small retrofit board or field kit.
  • Startup or small-team experience and comfort working without a large test lab.
  • Exposure to automotive, dealership, or industrial environments.
  • Experience using AI coding tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or OpenAI Codex.

Responsibilities

  • Build and operate field-failure tracking, categorizing failures, rates, and root causes across the installed base.
  • Reproduce and investigate intermittent field failures using logs, telemetry, and oscilloscope traces.
  • Deliver hardware and software recoverability improvements without a board respin, including watchdogs, safe-mode boot, remote reset paths, and A/B firmware with automatic rollback.
  • Instrument devices with fleet telemetry to detect failures early and safely deploy fixes to devices over the air.
  • Design and validate low-cost retrofits, such as power control or filtering, that field technicians can install in under 30 minutes.
  • Write runbooks that enable customer support to recover units without escalating to engineering.
  • Provide R&D with a prioritized, researched list of design issues supported by field data.
  • Travel to customer sites to diagnose issues and work with dealer service managers and the support team.

Benefits

  • Equity
