About The Position

The Diocese of San Diego is seeking a reliable and skilled Facilities Maintenance Technician (Handyman) to perform a variety of maintenance, repair, and improvement projects throughout diocesan facilities. This position is responsible for ensuring buildings, grounds, equipment, and fixtures are maintained in safe, functional, and attractive condition. The ideal candidate possesses broad knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, painting, electrical work, and general building maintenance and is committed to providing excellent service in support of the Diocese's mission.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of carpentry, painting, drywall repair, plumbing, and basic electrical work.
  • Ability to diagnose and perform minor to moderate building repairs independently.
  • Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years of handyman, maintenance, construction, or building repair experience preferred.
  • Experience performing repairs in commercial, institutional, church, or residential environments preferred.
  • Valid California driver's license and insurable driving record preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine maintenance and repair work on diocesan buildings, offices, meeting spaces, and residential facilities.
  • Identify and address maintenance issues before they become major repairs.
  • Perform basic carpentry work including repairing doors, cabinets, shelving, trim, and furniture.
  • Repair drywall, patch holes, and perform painting and touch-up work as needed.
  • Install and replace hardware such as locks, hinges, handles, and fixtures.
  • Repair and maintain flooring, windows, and other building components.
  • Perform minor plumbing repairs, including fixing leaks, replacing faucets, clearing drains, and repairing toilets.
  • Replace light fixtures, bulbs, switches, outlets, and other basic electrical components.
  • Troubleshoot common building maintenance issues and coordinate larger repairs with licensed contractors when necessary.
  • Conduct routine inspections of facilities to identify maintenance and safety concerns.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on building systems and equipment.
  • Maintain maintenance logs and report repair needs, equipment failures, and safety concerns.
  • Ensure tools, equipment, and supplies are maintained and properly stored.
  • Perform minor exterior repairs and upkeep of diocesan properties.
  • Assist with pressure washing, exterior painting, fence repairs, and general property maintenance.
  • Maintain walkways, parking lots, and outdoor areas in safe condition.
  • Support seasonal and special maintenance projects as assigned.
  • Assist with room setup, furniture relocation, and facility preparation for diocesan meetings and special events.
  • Move furniture, equipment, and supplies throughout diocesan properties.
  • Support small renovation and improvement projects as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with workplace safety procedures and best practices.
  • Identify and report safety hazards immediately.
  • Assist with securing buildings and facilities when necessary.
  • Operate tools and equipment safely and responsibly.
